Pan was founded 100 years later by Alan Bott and became one of the first popular paperback publishers in the UK. Pan published many famous authors for the first time in paperback, including Ian Fleming and Agatha Christie. In 1987, Pan became wholly owned by Macmillan and the company became known as Pan Macmillan.

  • In celebration of #InternationalVolunteerDay today we enjoyed a panel discussion chaired by Joanna Prior with Daniel Jenkins, Krishna Mulleth, Jodie Williams and Rebecca Perry from National Literacy Trust. They spoke about their own volunteering, through our partnership with the NLT and their own personal projects. We're proud to have so many colleagues at Pan Mac who dedicate their time and skills to making positive changes in their community and to society as a whole and to support this important work we offer everyone two paid volunteer days per year. #volunteering #volunteers #community #makingadifference

  • Our CEO Joanna Prior hosted a very special women in leadership breakfast event with Angela Merkel in celebration of her long-anticipated memoir Freedom yesterday. The event, which took place at The Lanesborough Hotel, was attended by BBC Europe editor Katya Adler; BBC broadcaster and journalist Emma Barnett; Professor Sarah Gilbert DBE, the co-developer of the Oxford AstraZeneca covid vaccine; 27th prime minister of Australia Julia Gillard; Jude Kelly, CEO of the Women of the World (WOW) foundation; Afua Kyei, CFO of the Bank of England; journalist and The News Agents co-presenter Emily Maitlis; Jenny Mollica, CEO of ENO and London Coliseum; Alison Noble OBE, Technikos Professor of Biomedical Engineering in the Institute of Biomedical Engineering; Juliet Stevenson CBE actor and narrator of Freedom in audiobook; former first minister of Scotland, Nicola Sturgeon. In conversation with the guests, the former chancellor of Germany spoke about self-belief and her journey to the chancellorship. On her swearing in as Germany’s first female chancellor in 2005, she commented: “A lot of people thought that I was an accident somehow”. Reflecting on her 16-year tenure at the top of German politics, Mrs. Merkel emphasised the importance of learning step by step and fact-based decision making. Acknowledging the gender disparity in top leadership positions globally, she emphasised the importance of networks that support women’s advancement and overcoming the needs to be liked: “If somebody senses you want to be liked, you let them participate in your emotions.” Mrs. Merkel also spoke about how vital the arts are to civic culture: “You can find a lot of solutions to problems by looking to art”. #Freedom #AngelaMerkel #womeninleadership

  • We were delighted to welcome back Andrew Douglass last week for a #purplesockday pop up shop hosted by our #Ability network. Today is International Day of Persons with Disabilities and the profits from these purple socks goes to the British Association of Supported Employment (BASE) to support disabled entrepreneurs. What's more, the socks are stylish, comfortable and sustainable. #idpwd #idpd24 #publishing #culture #inclusion #disability #socialimpact

Georgie Douglass & I had a great time taking our #PurpleSockDay 💜 🧦 Pop-up to Pan Macmillan. We were truly honoured to be the first event to help launch their #Ability Network last year and it was so nice to be given such a warm welcome back by all their wonderful staff. It was great to learn how much their network has grown over the past year and I am grateful to Elle Gibbons, the new Ability Network Co-Chair, and Briony Grogan for their kind invitation to join them once again for their #IDPD celebrations. As a measure of the extent of Pan Macmillan's support, they kindly bought the whole company lunch, whereby everybody - from the Chief Executive to the reception team - came together in their staff canteen. I gave a short talk about #IDPD and #PurpleSockDay 💜 🧦 followed by our pop-up sock sale. Members of the Ability Network also volunteered to help us with our Pop-up, and demonstrated a natural flair for retail sales. All the team were just so dedicated and simply awesome 🤩 Finally, keep your eyes peeled on 3rd December, as one of Pan Macmillan's newest authors will also be sharing some #PurpleSockDay 💜 🧦 joy. #IDPWD #IDPD24 #Disability #Neurodiversity #DisabilityInclusion #Publishing #Books #SocialImpact Alt: Picture 1: 5 of the Ability Network team, including Co-Chair Elle Gibbons, smiling and striking a pose by our branded Purple Sock Day pull-up banner in the Pan Macmillan canteen. It is a really happy picture, where you can just see rows of purple socks in the foreground on display. I have my trousers slightly rolled up to reveal my purple socks and Georgie is striking a pose by extending both arms out by the banner. • We are proud to share that one thousand children in hospital over Christmas will receive a gift-wrapped special edition of Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler's The Gruffalo’s Child. The picture book will be distributed across 31 children’s wards in hospitals across England and Wales this week, along with a box of Gruffalo’s Child activity sets. The donations from Macmillan Children’s Books and charity Read for Good mark 20 years since Donaldson and Scheffler’s follow up to The Gruffalo was published. The presents were gift wrapped by volunteers here at Pan Mac. #ReadforGood #TheGruffalosChild #JuliaDonaldson #AxelScheffler #MakingaDifference https://lnkd.in/epTti7JN
