Working for a climate resilient future

About us

Open Hydro is a mission-led organisation whose vision is a climate resilient, zero-carbon planet where water and energy are accessible to all. We live in a time of climate emergency where hydropower assets have an unprecedented role in addressing the global challenges we face, including water and energy access. Without reliable climate-related information and metrics that consider both water and energy services provided, hydropower projects risk continuing to struggle to demonstrate their role and contribution to tackle climate change and attract the necessary climate finance support. Open Hydro works to mobilise investment in hydropower; help the sector demonstrate climate action in mitigation, resilience and adaptation; and advance in the corporate and project level disclosure of climate-related risks and opportunities.

Decarbonising freshwater systems / Founder / Dams and Hydro

Spanish are used to la "Gota Fria" in the Mediterranean side but what happened this time? 💧👇 🚨📢 Early warning systems Despite the national meteorological agency, AEMET - Agencia Estatal de Meteorología, had activated red alert at 7am, and the Confederación Hidrográfica del Júcar had alerted of gullies overflown in the upper catchment at 8am, the authorities triggered the protocol to inform people too late at 8pm...12h later. The village that suffered the flooding didn't even see a drop of rain. That led to a sense of false safety and people went to the streets when a sudden wave with high velocity swept the villages. Early warning systems are important and we have advanced a lot on them but they need to be used! 🏞️🏘️Flood protection and catchment and urban planning. In 1957, Valencia region suffered a catastrophic flooding that lead to the building of hydraulic infrastructures for flood protections. The channel work at full capacity. However, a southern gully overflew leading to the catastrophic flooding in near villages. Paiporta is called the km0 of destruction because it is where more casualties have ocurred. In Valencia 1 out of 4 houses are built in flood zone but people don't know. When you buy a house there is no information about it although there is a public register about flood zones. ⛈️🌪️Climate change - extreme events more intense and frequent. The upstream catchment saw a rain of 600 l/m2 in less than 24 h, record of 491 l/m² in only 8h. The average annual rain in one day.  Since 1957 many other infrastructures have been built in the catchment and have been destroyed. We need to increase the period of return to face the new intensities and frequency due to climate change. The north atlantic current is slowing down and sending more frequently ice cold bags that when enter in contact with the increasingly warm Mediterranean makes a more intense "gota fría" or DANA. We need to limit global warming and for that we need to mitigate emissions in ALL sectors including the water sector, which is also one of the most affected. Thanks Monica Lopez Moyano for the good explanation about the North Atlantic currents and how much is attributable to climate change yesterday in TVE. #valencia #dana #climatechange #earlywarningsystems #watersector #climateadaptation #climatemitigation #flooding

  • 💧🌍 People from 13 countries, mostly females and young researchers, gathered in London to advance our understanding of GHG emissions from hydropower reservoirs. Open Hydro organised the Working Group 3 thematic workshop on #GHGemissions under the PEN@Hydropower project funded by the European Commission to progress research on this understudied topic. This topic is pivotal to supporting #hydropower ’s role in the clean energy transition and achieving the EU’s net-zero goals by 2050. 🫧 A hands-on session to search scientific studies and vibrant discussions made it a fruitful and successful workshop. We concluded that 🔷 There is still much uncertainty in global GHG emissions. 🔷 Current methodologies are built on empirical relationships which require site-specific calibration and for which transferability is in question. 🔷 Machine learning is emerging in this field to complement and accelerate the field data gap. 🔷 Case studies are varied and each sheds light on some variable, but it is hard to extrapolate. As workshop outcomes, we identified 8 research questions on which we will work at the WG3 Task 1 GHG emissions. If you want to participate more information in the comments.👇 Thank you to all the participants, especially those who could make it to London for your effort and dedication. Carla Silva, Cristina Diez Santos, Derya KARAKAYA, Melissa Nogueira Sondermann, Mohammad Areeb Anwer, Dr. Manu Seth, Sourav Sahoo, Tanja Preseren Ibrahim Halil Demirel, David Christian Finger, Jamal El Mansour, Maja Brborić, María Dolores Bejarano Carrión, Milena Rajic, Miroslav Petrinić, Tina Dasic, Branka Nakomcic-Smaragdakis, Emanuele Quaranta and Valbona Karapici Special thanks for the support of the coordinators at Technische Universität Wien, Daniel Patauner and Eduard Doujak. • Are women-focused events worthwhile? ♀️👩🏾💻👩🏼🦰👩🏾 Our female co-founders, Cristina Diez Santos and Maria Ubierna, had the pleasure of attending the Pitch HearstLab competition, the best high-growth competition for women-led startups globally, which took place for the first time in London. Open Hydro is glad to see how HearstLab International is an example of support for women entrepreneurs and extends that influence to the UK with Hearst UK. With so little venture investment going to women-led enterprises, these women-focused events become important for finding welcoming and supportive networks. Meeting other female co-founders and female-focus investors like HearstLab, HERMESA and Alma Angels is always encouraging and uplifting.  ♀️🫶🏿 🌟Let’s celebrate women's progress in the startup world by congratulating the winners of the £100k check who build innovative solutions with AI in #fintech and #SaaS software, Barbara Gottardi of Finbridge Global and Kayleigh Ciara Kuptz of Deployed. And, to Chloe Sweden of Lowr, who won the bonus editorial prize package from the hosting partner Harper's Bazaar. It was great to meet you in person, Azahara García Espejo, and the whole team! #PitchHearstLab #WomenLedStartups #FemaleFounders #HearstUK

  • We are excited about the changes of wind in the UK to embrace #decarbonisation in all sectors. 🍃 Last night, our team attended a BusinessGreen event to gain insights about what the green economy can expect from the new UK government, hosted at Sustainable Ventures. The panel discussed the ambitious mandates for the green transition and emphasized the importance of putting people at the heart of the energy transition. Key takeaways from the event included: - The power of economic opportunity in driving sustainable change - The need for policies to protect people during the green transition - The government's substantial mandate to pursue rapid green transition - The shift in approach compared to previous strategies We look forward to how this will translate into regulations, policies or funding for the water utilities and the water-tech sector to accelerate our solutions to decarbonise freshwater systems. #watertech #waterutilities #greeneconomy
