    As I step into my 10th year in data and analytics recruitment 😬 , I’ve been reflecting on how far the industry has come—and how much there is still to achieve. Over the years, I’ve seen incredible progress, but one thing stands out to me is that data consultancies/services companies are the driving force behind creating real business value through data. For organizations that thrived in 2024, the message was clear: data initiatives must deliver measurable impact. When I began my journey, data analytics was simply about reporting and insights. But as we approach 2025, I’m energized by how innovation continues to transform the field. One word: Databricks I’m not a tech expert, but this platform excites me. In this moment in time and from I am seeing, Databricks is leading the way in unlocking incredible possibilities for businesses to tackle complex challenges and make smarter decisions. I realized this even more when I attended the DAIS earlier this year—it was a real eye-opener to what Databricks can do for businesses. I knew then that I wanted to be more involved in supporting this growing ecosystem. Although ON Data Staffing started focusing on Databricks for our Data Consultancy clients last year, we’ve quickly become the go-to partner for multiple Databricks partners across North America, Germany & the UK. This is just the beginning. With Databricks’ recent growth and investment, ON Data Staffing is committed to supporting Databricks partners with their hiring needs well into 2025 and beyond.     🔊 Over the past few months, I’ve connected with numerous Data Consultancies preparing to deliver Databricks services to their clients. Many are still testing the waters, just establishing their Databricks partnership, and reaching out to us for guidance on the market for talent. One way ON Data Staffing has been able to add value is by helping clients prepare for projects they anticipate starting soon. Even if they don’t have a live project yet, they know they’ll need skilled data engineers at short notice — and we’re here to support them with that. For two different clients, we recently completed four FTE placements, moving candidates from the first interview to the start date within 3-4 weeks — right in line with each client’s timeline. In fact, we’re currently working on a project that requires December and January start dates and already have the talent lined up. This is not luck, its due to extensive work in this space over the past year, we have a network of around 1,000 QUALIFED Databricks Data Engineers across the U.S, not all are certified, but all are passionate about Databricks and ML/Data Engineering.     "What certifications should I get that could help me secure a new role?" I get this question a lot from candidates who are actively looking for new opportunities and may be struggling in their job search. My answer is always the same: DO NOT just chase a certification—chase what you’re genuinely passionate about! I understand that is tempting to focus on certifications that seem to be in demand, but while being certified in X is great for the resume. Companies are actually looking for those who have a real passion for a specific technology/data platform and are excited to champion that space. You can go into an interview with a passion for technology/data platforms and the goal of being certified. Hiring teams know if you’re truly interested in technology, that enthusiasm will show in interviews and then in the role itself. So before you spend countless hours outside your of 9-5 into getting certified, ask yourself: Am I genuinely curious and excited about this ? If the answer is yes, then go for it! If not, it might be worth exploring other areas that truly spark your interest.     I've collaborated with many Data & AI consulting teams over the past 9 years. YES 9 years. Some were fantastic 😃 Some, not so much 🙄 The Good: They adopt a client-first mindset, ensuring the client's needs and goals are prioritized at every step of the process. Their focus isn't on short-term profits but on how they can genuinely help clients and effectively communicate the value of their services. They seek to hire problem solvers and innovators who can drive change. Their teams enjoy high employee retention, and consultants at all levels feel connected to the company’s vision. The Bad: They build the consulting process around solutions that maximize financial returns rather than focusing on the client's actual needs. Their primary goal is profit, often placing financial gain above client satisfaction. They hire based on technical skills alone, neglecting customer-facing abilities and soft skills. High staff turnover, with employees frequently leaving for competitors. More of the good, please. Less of the bad.     "I'm not actively seeking roles, but I am staying in touch with recruiters." Even though Linkedin adverts say 100’s of applications, I’ve noticed many candidates in today’s Data market are hesitant to apply directly. Instead, they're taking a more passive approach, waiting to be contacted by recruiters. This strategy can be effective, especially if you've updated your LinkedIn status to "open to opportunities" and are open to receiving messages from recruiters. (To clarify, I'm not referring to the visible green banner that your current employer can see, but rather the option in your LinkedIn settings that lets recruiters outside your company know you're open to hearing about roles.) I ALWAYS recommend having an initial conversation with a recruiter who specializes in your field, as it is one of the most efficient ways to explore new roles. This way, you're likely to be approached for positions that truly fit your experience and a business that aligns with your values That being said, LinkedIn job ads still offer value. While I often receive hundreds of applications, there's always that rare gem that stands out. One thing is clear: the top professionals in this field not only excel in technical expertise but also shine in their ability to communicate effectively. While strong technical skills are essential, I’ve observed that communication often plays an even more pivotal role for the best in the industry. Here’s why: Translating Data into Insights: Data is powerful, but its true value comes from the insights it reveals. Clear communication is crucial to turning complex data into actionable insights, helping decision-makers truly understand and use the information. Engaging Stakeholders: Data consultants work with stakeholders from different departments and with varying levels of expertise.     I saw a post the other day saying candidates should not do technical tests How silly If you’re applying for a technical role, you must complete a technical test or case study related to your experience. Why would a hiring company take someone on board without putting their knowledge to the test first? In my opinion, some sort of technical test should be conducted in the second or third stage of the interview process. 1st Screen 2nd Technical Discussion 3rd Case Study or test 4th Final A technical test doesn’t just evaluate skills, it also shows how committed and serious the candidate is about the role and how well they prepare.
