🦉 Birds of prey (eagles, owls, hawks, falcons) can be tricky to survey using technological approaches. They are often silent for long periods (with owls being the exception), can be secretive, and live at naturally low densities. 📸 We've been testing how wildlife cameras can be used to systematically survey birds of prey for our clients in the UK. 💡So far we've had great success detecting merlin, goshawk, tawny owl, marsh harrier and others on multiple projects. Checkout this tawny owl inspecting one of our "raptor posts" deployed in partnership with the fantastic team at Environment Bank. #BirdofPrey #Owl #Biodiversity #UK #Wildlife #CameraTrap #NatureTech #BiodiversityAnalysis Rob Wreglesworth Nikita Worthington Emma Toovey

🌍 Our team in Gabon recently had the privilege of hosting Simon Day, the British High Commissioner to Gabon. We discussed Okala’s plans to explore how nature tech can be used to improve conservation and sustainable wildlife tourism in Gabon’s forests. 🖥 Dr David Lehmann, Okala’s Senior Conservation Scientist, demonstrated how our innovative, technology driven approach could be used to develop and scale sustainable mandrill tourism. Okala is exploring how tech-led tourism can contribute to addressing issues of poverty and livelihood insecurity in forest communities through training and job creation. 🐘 Our visit to Okala’s tourism partner, “Chez Betty”, in Nyonié, was a resounding success. We were fortunate to spot elephants, leatherback turtles, and even a rhinoceros viper! #SustainableTourism #Gabon #WildlifeProtection #CommunityEmpowerment #EcoTourism #Okala #NatureTech #Wildlife #Conservation

🌍 Exciting News in Ecology! 🌿I am thrilled to announce the publication of our paper - " Range Extension and Behavioural Observations of the Flat-Headed Cusimanse (Crossarchus platycephalus) in Gabon” in the African Journal of Ecology. ✏ As the lead author, I am proud to share that our research highlights a significant range extension of this fascinating species into areas where it has never been recorded before. Our findings reveal that the southern limit of the flat-headed cusimanse's known range has extended by an impressive 172 km! This breakthrough not only enhances our understanding of the species' distribution but also raises important questions about its habitat and conservation status in Gabon. 💚 A heartfelt thank you to my co-authors and everyone involved in this project, with special thanks to Okala and Jeremy Cusack. Your support and collaboration made this achievement possible. #Ecology #Biodiversity #Research #Conservation #Gabon #FlatHeadedCusimanse #AI #BiodiversityTech #NatureTech

🔬 Okala science news! Have you heard of a Cusimanse? If not, don't worry because neither had our AI model! Okala and co-authors from the Institut de Recherche en Ecologie Tropicale, University of Stirling, University of Fort Hare and Sol Plaatje University recently discovered that the flat-headed Cusimanse - a communal mongoose - is much more widespread than previously known. The work was led by Johanna McQuade at Okala and published in the African Journal of Ecology. 📰 Have a read of the abstract here - https://lnkd.in/emtFysig 🖥 Our AI platform allowed us to rapidly label thousands of HD camera trap videos from multiple projects across Gabon. We noticed the AI was confused by several interesting mongoose videos and confirmed that they were indeed the flat-headed cusimanse, previously unknown to the region. 🌿 We're dedicated to advancing biodiversity knowledge using scalable technology and offer a huge thank you to all our collaborators. #NatureTech #Biodiversity #Okala #AI #ArtificialIntelligence #Conservation #Science #Mammal #Mongoose #NatureBasedSolutions #JournalArtical #Paper #Ecology

❗New Paper! Some more not-strictly-the-day-job, job - An updated inventory and community composition of the invertebrate diversity in Svalbard, led by Steve Coulson 🦟We report on 1091 species, with Diptera the most dominant, and new species records from the last inventory 10 years ago attributed to a combination of increased research as well as more non-native species as the Arctic warms and pathways into Svalbard increase through human movement. ❄️ By global accounts, polar systems are simple to study - yet this new inventory shows that mapping the diversity is still an ever evolving task as pressures shift species ranges, niche availability and alter community structure. 🌴 Which is why we are still far behind in other systems, and in the tropics are likely losing invertebrate species before we even know of their existence, let alone the roles they played in our ecosystems. 💚I am grateful that the commercial space has welcomed biodiversity survey companies like Okala, NatureMetrics, Pivotal Future, biometrio.earth and especially invert nerds like Thomas Walla for driving their attention and technologies to scaling exactly the types of inventories we need today! https://lnkd.in/gHjcyR4H The University Centre in Svalbard

Bioacoustics is an affordable and scalable tool for monitoring birds and bats. Handling the data can be a challenge, but our nature reporting platform makes it simple. We have integrated Google's amazing 'Perch' global AI model for bird sounds (thanks Google!). The model makes mistakes (there are over 10,000 birds after all) but, using our bioacoustics interface an ornithologist can rapidly review and clean bird sounds recorded from thousands of hours of audio. We've identified hundreds of species this year alone. This video clip shows five examples from projects in both Africa and the UK recorded this year. We know many people have more bioacoustics data than they can handle, so get in touch to find out how our platform can make your life easier. #Bioacoustics #Biodiversity #BiodiversityAnalytics #Birds #BirdCall #Okala #BiodiversityTech #AI #ArtificialIntelligence

Robin Whytock and Johanna McQuade recently returned from an inspiring conference in London focussed on Corporate Investments into Forestry and Biodiversity. The conference was well attended by industry experts with lots of thought provoking panel discussions. We were proud to demonstrate our latest software and tech solutions for enhancing and scaling ecological monitoring and reporting. The feedback we received was overwhelmingly positive, reinforcing our commitment to drive innovation in the sector. Thank you to everyone who made this event a success and thank you CIFB for having us! Let’s continue working together towards a greener and more biodiverse future. #CIFB #CIFB2024 #Conference #London #Biodiversity #Okala #BiodiversityAnalytics #Tech #software #NatureTech #BiodiversityTech
