Imposter syndrome is one of the most used terms in career conversations and it’s often cited as the thing that’s holding most people back It’s definitely something most of us experience at some point but I’m so over people saying they have it and stopping there. It’s like COVID - whilst we were all going through the experience, none of us went through the exact same thing…its showed up differently for all of us and the effects of what we lived through are also playing out differently for all of us. In the same way, using a generic term to describe what you’re feeling will leave you with generic action…and that’s not going to get you anywhere fast 👀 🙋🏾♀️ My imposter syndrome shows up when I’m in a. Room full of people I don’t know, who I believe are more informed on a topic than me and I don’t feel prepared enough…for one of my friends, its how’s up when they are with senior people and they have to ask a question, for another one of my friends, it’s when she’s negotiating with people older than her…you get the gist 💫 It’s important to peel the onion with what you’re feeling and really get to the core…So here’s 5 practical steps you can take to help you tackle imposter syndrome: 1. Write down the scenario you're in when it occurs...what is the situation, where are you, who is there? Keep a log 2. Write down the doubts you have - are they things you believe or things people have said to you? How much is fact vs feeling? 3. Keep a folder of positive feedback and achievements-look at this when you have self doubt and keep adding to the folder as you get more praise 4. Find a grounding technique- something that's unique to you that you can do in work situations, to help you work through the imposter syndrome when it shows up 5. Remember, not everyone is focussing on you. Most people focus on themselves so give yourself a break and remember who you are and what it took to be where you are Hope this helps... #impostersyndrome #fightimpostersyndrome #careertips #careerdevelopment

“There are no handouts!” One of the many comments that hit home during my conversation with Tasneem Bhamji on What My Best Friend Does. A reminder that nothing in your career is given. If you want a promotion you have to go and earn it! Some things to help you go and earn your promotion: 1. Start doing work for the job you want 2. Take 100% responsibility for all your actions. 3. Let people know you want a promotion, so you are front of mind when roles become available 4. Make sure your manager sponsors you. 5. Shout about the great work you do! Is there anything I’ve missed? 🤔 cc Office Real Talk

Launch post….eeeek 😬 👋🏾 I’m Tas and I work as an exec in the corporate world. I spend a lot of time, both in and out of work, talking to people who look like me or come from backgrounds like mine, about what it takes to succeed and how I got here. 🤷🏾♀️ The truth is I don’t know…I mean I worked super hard, I put my hand up for loads of things I didn’t know how to do and I worked through all the times I was uncomfortable. But I don’t have a magic answer… ✨ I come from a family where nobody worked in corporate and as the eldest of four, I was the first to go to uni and land a job in a Bank. There was no career advice at home - my mum is a single parent and did loads of jobs to give us an amazing start. In the community I’m from, nobody had any wisdom to share about the corporate challenges I faced and any unsolicited advice I did get was heavily related to cultural beliefs. So I figured it out as I went along but it was hard and scary at times…especially the more senior I became and the less people I saw that I could relate to or that looked like me. People were mostly (not always) helpful and kind, but their advice didn’t always resonate. I was facing my own battles that were engrained from my upbringing and struggled to get help on the specifics…the stuff nobody was talking about openly... (more to come on this but perfectionism, "imposter syndrome", scarcity mindset, the need for security and validation, uncomfortable with self advocacy, lack of belonging...to name a few) I also got a bit fed up of everyone thinking we were owed stuff and complaining about their employer, the lack of opportunities, bias etc …I’m not denying any of that stuff is true for many of us and there’s along way to go on equity, but we can’t control what others do, we can only control how we show up and the choices we make… 🎤 So fast forward many years and millions of lessons later…I’m here to pay it forward and help more people like me unlock their career potential. I wanted to create a community for us, by one of us, where we can have the conversations that really matter - and that’s why I created Office Real Talk 💚 Expect lots of honest dialogue, very little fluff and some tough love…because that’s what it takes ✌🏾 You can also check out my linktree or follow me on insta @officerealtalk (if thats where you hang) for more… 👀 #careers #careerguidance #ethnicminorities #diversityandinclusion #womenofcolour
