NHS Veteran Aware
Hospitals and Health Care
Supporting NHS trusts, and other healthcare providers, to meet the needs of the Armed Forces community.
About us
NHS Veteran Aware accredited NHS trusts, and other healthcare providers, have demonstrated their commitment to providing the best care for, and support to, the Armed Forces community in their area. Accreditation involves providers sharing good practice, linking with local services for the Armed Forces Community and increasing staff understanding of how they can support the Armed Forces community. Our ambition is to accredit all NHS providers in England as Veteran Aware and continue to support those trusts that have already accredited.

As 2024 comes to a close, we’re reflecting on a remarkable year at Broughton House. From celebrating two incredible 101st birthdays to hosting 156 gym sessions in our purpose-built gym, we’ve been busy creating moments that matter for our residents and veterans. This year, we supported over 100 residents with high-quality residential care, relaunched our Armed Forces Support Hub to better serve veterans in the Greater Manchester community, and even received the prestigious Gold Award under the Defence Employer Recognition Scheme. None of this would have been possible without our dedicated team and loyal supporters. Thank you for being part of our journey—we’re excited for what 2025 will bring! ✨ ✨

We are delighted to introduce you to Ben McComb who is a DGS alumnus from 2 yrs ago. During the programme he found a safe and secure space, to think about what the future may hold. He is now a veteran entrepreneur, and in his own words' he describes his journey; 'Upon coming out of hospital in January 2023, having suffered immensely from the horrible effects of PTSD. I attended a DGS course with the view to get outside and get moving again. When my attention started to turn towards what I would do beyond the course, and the military, tree surgery seemed like a great option. I’d be outdoors, working in nature in a physically challenging job, with the potential for continuous professional growth. I started out as a ‘one man band’ operation, but this quickly grew to something much bigger. I now run Veteran Tree Surgeons and we operate across West Lancashire and Merseyside offering a full range of tree surgery services'. Ben is doing so well that he is now looking for staff and is keen to offer this opportunity to fellow veterans. #veterans #horticulturaltherapy #timeandspace #entrepreneur #veteransemployment Helen Hurst RGN Dip ANC QN Sue Jeffries #TomHarrisonHouse Armed Forces Covenant Fund Trust SSAFA the Armed Forces charity Help for Heroes The Poppy Factory Charlie Marno

See below for details on the financial recognition scheme, for those veterans affected by the ban, following the Etherton Review.
The historic treatment of LGBT veterans was a moral stain on our nation. Today, the Defence Secretary John Healey announced the launch of the LGBT Financial Recognition Scheme. This follows extensive engagement with LGBT veterans and increases the total amount available for payments to £75 million, significantly above the level recommended in the Etherton Review into the treatment of LGBT veterans. As we work to renew the nation’s contract with those who serve, and have served, we are also committed to righting the wrongs of the past. Read more about the scheme: https://ow.ly/JtNh50Uq3rl
