This week, our CEO, Paul Patras, took part in the Future of Communications workshop hosted by the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology and the Government Office for Science. The discussions highlighted the critical role of communications infrastructure in advancing various areas of innovation for the UK. Key topics included the importance of converged terrestrial and non-terrestrial networks and the pioneering role of AI-driven technologies in telecoms 📡 It’s exciting to see growing recognition of the need to support innovative companies like Net AI, ensuring that emerging technologies can be adopted swiftly to drive progress 🚀
Very engaging workshop today on the Future of Communications organised by the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology and the Government Office for Science. It was great to share opinions with some of the UK's leading experts in different disciplines that touch on telecoms and with stakeholders from industry, SMEs, funding agencies, and public sector departments for whom resilient high-speed connectivity is of strategic importance. We focused on identifying innovation areas with the greatest economic potential, areas where the UK can excel, topics critical to national security, and fundamental technologies that could underpin cross-sector advancements and tomorrow's communications and computing infrastructure. I was pleased to see the importance of converged terrestrial and non-terrestrial networks being recognised, an area in which Net AI is contributing through our involvement in the ETHER project. Most importantly, I was chuffed about the almost unanimous acknowledgement of the vital role Telco AI is expected to play, the need for funding to support innovating companies such as Net AI and consistency in providing such support, as well as the much needed agility and availability of mobile network operators to adopt emerging innovations. A better location for the event than the Churchill War Rooms would have been difficult to find for this event. I learned this was by coincidence, but it was from there where Churchill was having regular communications with Roosevelt and where gauges of old age voltage regulators can still be seen today.

This was a fascinating discussion about the future of telecoms and the crucial role AI will play—not just in technology, but in how professionals in the telco industry, will adapt and operate. See the full conversation below 👇
Most of the time, we talk about how AI, ML and GenAI change the way we run and operate networks, enable automation, tame complexity, and improve efficiency. They also change the way we – the humans in telecoms – operate, the skills we need, and how we deal with AI-based platforms. This will require profound changes and our ability to meet the cultural and technological challenges is going to be crucial to benefit from AI. I talked with Azita Arvani, Stanford Sloan Fellow Arvani, formerly at Rakuten Symphony NA, and Paul Patras at Net AI and the The University of Edinburgh about how AI, ML and GenAI will change our networks and the people working with them – vendors, service providers, researchers, analysts and everybody else.
