The ONS employment figures released today show that economic inactivity in the North East has risen despite a slight reduction in the region’s unemployment rate📈 The English Devolution White Paper released yesterday outlines the opportunity for integrated funding settlements for combined authorities and greater devolved powers relating to skills, planning, transport and housing. These enhanced powers will be critical for reducing barriers to work and economic inactivity in the region. The White Paper also recognises the critical role of Local Skills Improvement Plans in creating targeted local strategies to best address regional skills shortages and economic inactivity. As deliverer of two of the region’s Plans we look forward to working with the region’s two combined authorities in partnership to create a stronger, fairer economy North East. 📢 The A167 Gateshead Highway flyover is now closed due to safety concerns. This may cause significant disruptions for local businesses and commuters. Diversions are in place, and we encourage members to plan alternative routes. Stay informed and refer to Gateshead Council’s official channels for further updates.
Immediate closure for Gateshead Highway The A167 Gateshead Highway flyover has been shut to all traffic after an inspection by consultant structural engineers indicated a potential risk to safety if it remains open. The whole of the flyover is being closed this evening, Friday 13 December. The road beneath the flyover will also be closed between the Park Lane roundabout (junction with A184 Felling bypass) and the Five Bridges roundabout (junction with B1426 Sunderland Road). The two roundabouts below the flyover will remain open, after expert advice from the consultant engineers confirmed it was safe to do so, allowing traffic to continue east/west and access between the A184 Felling bypass and the Tyne Bridge, and to the A1 regionwide. The council is working with neighbouring local authorities to manage traffic as efficiently as we can, and signpost drivers to alternative routes, or to use public transport where possible. https://lnkd.in/dnZY_QHX A map of the closure is below and a diversion route is here: https://lnkd.in/dxgU8Vug
