We made a trip up to London for a dose of inspiration at the Net Zero Festival this year 🌍 So much to learn from a melting pot of business leaders, activists, climate scientists, policy makers ; real movers and shakers. 🌱 A panel on net zero priorities for the new government discussed the pressing need for government stability + strong leadership + a clear sense of direction so businesses can confidently invest in decarbonisation efforts. Juliette Sanders a.k.a. Killah Jules reminded us that the UK is not only the first major economy to completely phase out coal, but has also halved its emissions while growing the economy by 79% since 1990 - putting us in a fantastic position to keep leading the way towards an achievable net zero future. 🌱 Collaboration is key: while this is a widely known fact, it’s especially relevant within the sustainability sphere. Sharing knowledge and working together on common barriers will unlock a lot more investment and opportunities, providing the much needed acceleration for the net zero transition. 🌱 Skills gap: Even a perfect plan needs the right people, with the right skills, to succeed. There seems to be a general consensus that we have the knowledge, the tech and we know what needs to be done, yet we're severely lacking in willpower and individuals with specialised skill sets. 🌱 A fantastic workshop by Forum for the Future on how to build just, regenerative and resilient value chains. Our personal favourite was reflecting on the importance of context while making demands from suppliers - it's crucial to consider the history and local needs of producers, communities and landscapes. To end on a very sobering quote from Simon Reeve: “I think it’s important to remember that we’re not trying to save the planet - the Earth will live on as it has for many years - we’re trying to save us.” #netzerofestival2024 #businessgreen

Organic mattresses and beds, made by hand in Devon
About us
Mattress makers Naturalmat are proud to stamp ‘made by hand in Devon’ on their products. Originating in the marine industry, Founders Mark Tremlett and Peter Tindall both sail and hated the synthetic mattresses found on most yachts. They found that natural fibres make the best and most suitable mattresses as they are inherently self-ventilating so designed a range for boats and yachts. When Mark’s wife became pregnant, they realised most baby and children’s mattresses were made from synthetic material so expanded the range. Today, Naturalmat is an international award-winning business that offers a huge range of mattresses, beds and bedding for babies through to grown ups, all from natural and organic materials. Handmade and bespoke, you can find mohair, cashmere, bamboo, cotton and natural latex in the range and their luxurious beds can be found in hotels all over the world. Naturalmat have kept their roots in Devon with their purpose-built factory and impressive showroom open to the public in Odhams Wharf, Topsham. Even the organic lambswool they use is locally sourced from certified farms within a 50 mile radius of Topsham.

Our team got up bright and early last week for a productive litter-picking session on Exmouth beach, organised by Rebecca, our Head of People & Culture. We were welcomed by Valerie from Plastic Free Exmouth, who gave us an overview of their work and some insight into what to look out for on the beach, and all our equipment was provided by Surfers Against Sewage as part of their Million Mile Clean initiative. Our team collected 20kg in under two hours! Find out how you can get involved here: https://lnkd.in/enx8mXQK.

A few weeks ago, our team gathered from all corners of the country for our annual Summer party. This celebration gave us the opportunity to showcase the progress of our new Devon showroom and HQ to our teams from London, Knutsford, and the Cotswolds, as seen behind our jolly group above. We had a great time visiting Innovation Zero at Olympia London last week! Fantastic to hear from such a diverse range of speakers - scientists, policymakers, academics, industry leaders and innovators - all coming together to inspire a greener, safer future for everyone 🌍 Here are some of our key highlights and takeaways: 🌱 Insightful panel discussions with climate scientists emphasising the urgency of staying on track with our net zero targets. 🌱 Costs of the Net Zero transition: highlighted the importance of sharing the financial burden equitably. This means a greater contribution must come from those with larger funding pots and government subsidies should help ensure that people are not forced to pay what they can't afford. 🌱 Circular Economy: Incorporating more recycled materials to reduce waste, bring down the energy needed for production (recycled materials require far less energy for production compared to virgin materials) and relieve the immense pressure on our natural systems (less digging, growing, mining and cutting down of trees can help restore our dwindling biodiversity). Overall, a humbling reminder that a sustainable future is one where we embrace longevity by having fewer possessions to cherish and care for, something we're always advocating through our Mattress for Life Initiative™ ♻

With families across the UK struggling to get a good night's rest, we've made it our mission to make healthy sleep accessible to all. We're so proud to be working with Cotton Lives On™ to not only reduce waste but also alleviate bed poverty by donating these exclusive recycled cotton mattresses to people in need.
Where’s your old cotton t-shirt headed? What about your excess fabric and manufacturing off-cuts? - Charity shop? - Landfill? What if it could help people and planet? What if it could become something new? What if it could help someone in need? It can. Cotton can, because it's a natural, recyclable, circular fibre. Old cotton apparel and home textiles are reprocessed and turned into recycled fibres that are then made into insulation pads that make the perfect filling for mattresses by Naturalmat - a leading Devon-based mattress manufacturer. The recycled pads are layered together with wool and covered with a recycled cotton mattress cover to make the exclusive Naturalmat x Cotton Lives On™ roll mats. These mattress roll mats are then given to various charities across the UK that are working to tackle sleep poverty such as Single Homeless Project, Refuweegee and Shelter. "It's brilliant to be part of a sustainable initiative like Cotton Lives On™ that helps the planet, and people experiencing homelessness at the same time. Knowing you have a safe and comfortable bed to sleep in means you can focus on living better and healthier." Vicky Ames, Head of Communications at Single Homeless Project The more old cottons you give for recycling; the more roll mats we can make to give back to the community. So don’t delay - give us your old cottons today and we’ll do the rest. - Learn more at https://lnkd.in/eYh7HQ4i
