Blended Meat, Hybrid Meat, Hybrid Plantbased, new terms and products describtions, surely a huge step forward! Lots of challenges ahead but very exciting times! Collaborating and pulling together the right partners, the technology and science dovetailing with Innovation, will be key to the success of these products! #newfood #cultivatedmeat #plantbased #innovation #transformationalfood #naturalispeople
The world's largest food company has just entered the "blended meat" category ______________________________________________________________ 👍 👎 Feelings about "blended" products in the sustainable food space are mixed. Some feel it's unnecessary or doesn't go far enough on eating sustainably, while others feel it's one of the only approaches that can make a meaningful impact today (and not in 5-20 years) because people simply don't want to cut out meat 💲 This week, Nestlé introduced a plant-based meat product designed to be blended with conventional beef in Chile, with the focus on affordability as a key selling point. Now, buy 1lb of meat, and get 2lbs of meat + their blended plant-based protein, but it all tastes like meat and is much cheaper than 2lbs of meat (#math) Sonalie and I discuss our thoughts on this in this week's podcast, and to cut to the chase, I DO NOT have mixed thoughts on blended products 👍 I think blended is a here-and-now tool to help people eat less meat without feeling like they're giving anything up Quorn Foods just mentioned adding a line on this. 50/50 Foods, Inc just got called out in a new report that consumers liked it more than plant-based products, and various other companies are doing work in this space ❓ Why is this a helpful approach ❓ Because while there's still meat, it's less meat. And while some like to live in a bubble world where everyone may give up meat for whole food plant-based diets, I think those people are flat out wrong I think smaller shifts are hard, but possible, and apparently the biggest food company in the world thinks so too 🤔 I've talked about this before, so I'm anticipating the comments from those that think I'm an idiot. And If I'm wrong, then the market will tell us soon enough But would love to hear what you think about this - unless you disagree with me. Then you're wrong 😛 ______________________________________________________________ This week, Sonalie and I also hit on: 🌏 Andy Jarvis of the Bezos Earth Fund talking about the alt protein space. Made some good points about it being early innings for sustainable foods, and I love the focus on R&D and building an open-source foundation for the space 🐼 Panda Restaurant Group is reintroducing Beyond Meat's orange chicken, and the headlines have framed things entirely wrong. Great reminder to not take everything you read on the internet at face value 🛒 Lidl in Germany and World Wildlife Fund offer us our positive of the week, which is VERY positive, as they're working together to make the retailer's supply chain more planet-friendly. THIS is the type of work that will take the burden off consumers to be more sustainable, and we're all about it 🎙 Podcast episode in the comments
