We're excited to announce that our 700+ hectare Cairngorms Peatland Restoration Project is now ready for investment and Peatland Carbon Credit purchase. It is shocking that 3.5% of the UK’s total greenhouse gas footprint comes from degraded peatland, and our work is directly addressing this. The project is located in the heart of the majestic Cairngorms National Park in the central Highlands of Scotland. As well as providing a vital climate solution, the project is enhancing natural habitats, conserving wildlife species, naturally reducing pollutants and rebalancing nutrient levels. The project is creating jobs for the local community, seeking to demonstrate how private financing can shoulder a greater share of the costs of peatland restoration with less reliance on public funding, and giving 10% of any project profits to a local community trust. Find out more about the project https://lnkd.in/eNwJ4URF With Cairngorms National Park Authority, Palladium: Make It Possible and National Parks Partnerships #naturebasedsolutions #peatlandcarboncredits #UK #highintegrity

Created alongside the NHS, National Parks were envisioned through a “people’s charter for the open air" when they were founded 75 years ago. What should they look like in another 75 years time? 👏💚More birthday celebrations for our fifteen wonderful National Parks and the whole National Parks UK Family today! Read the story of how it all began https://lnkd.in/eUDs8bUc With National Parks UK
Celebrating 75 years of the National Parks and Access to the Countryside Act, which has shaped the landscapes we cherish today. 🍃 This landmark legislation created National Parks, Sites of Special Scientific Interest, National Landscapes and National Nature Reserves ensuring access to nature for all. It laid the foundation for modern nature conservation and public access to beautiful, protected spaces. Today, our protected landscapes contribute £6 billion to the economy and support both nature and our health. But there’s still much to do. We are committed to working towards the recovery of nature at scale. This includes protecting 30% of our land and sea by 2030, restoring habitats, and tackling the climate and biodiversity crises. Together, we can ensure nature remains accessible, sustainable, and thriving for generations to come. 💚 Read more in our latest blog: https://lnkd.in/ebAgqykc #Nature #Conservation #NationalParks #Sustainability #NaturalEngland #ProtectedLandscapes #SSSI

It's an important milestone for the UK National Parks today. To commemorate our 75 Years there was a whole episode of BBC Countryfile filmed in the Peak District, our first National Park: https://lnkd.in/eHVzv2k7 National Parks Partnerships National Parks UK National Parks England
🎂 HAPPY BIRTHDAY to the National Parks UK and Access to the Countryside Act! 🎉 Seventy-five years ago, this groundbreaking law – described as the “people’s charter for the open air” – was passed through parliament, leading to the creation of the UK’s first National Parks. In the aftermath of World War Two, the act opened up the countryside to ordinary people, while also giving protection to the nature and heritage of our most beautiful landscapes, safeguarding these beautiful places for future generations – like us – to enjoy. Created a year after the founding of the NHS, National Parks were intended to be our ‘natural health service’. Today there are 15 National Parks across the UK, covering 10% of Britain’s land. They range from the sub-arctic mountains of the Cairngorms to the vineyards of the South Downs; from the jagged peaks of Eryri to the wildlife-filled wetlands of the Broads; from the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Lake District to the ancient oakwoods of the New Forest. As we celebrate this milestone, we’re reminded of the ongoing importance of National Parks in addressing the urgent challenges we face today, particularly the climate crisis and nature loss. Our National Parks are leading the charge in landscape-scale nature restoration, implementing nature-based solutions that restore ecosystems, enhance biodiversity, and combat climate change. This approach benefits not just the environment but also people and communities, demonstrating how people and nature can thrive together despite global challenges. Let’s continue shaping the future of UK National Parks and the vital role they play in benefiting everyone. By collaborating, we can create a sustainable legacy, ensuring that these iconic landscapes remain vibrant, resilient, and home to flourishing ecosystems for generations to come. John Dower might not be a household name, but anyone who has ever enjoyed our National Parks has been influenced by his vision. Dower lived in Malhamdale in the closing years of World War Two. Drawing on the inspiration provided by his Yorkshire Dales surroundings - the craggy limestone landscape, with its woods, wildflower meadows, and longstanding farming heritage - he wrote a report which paved the way for the creation of the first protected landscapes in England in Wales. Yesterday, the 75th anniversary of the National Parks and Countryside Act was marked with the unveiling of a blue plaque to Dower at Malham Youth Hostel, along with an event where a host of speakers reflected on the last seven decades of National Parks - and looked ahead to the next.
