The next generation of advanced plastic recycling

About us

Mura Technology is pioneering a unique, globally scalable technology to recycle the 'unrecyclable' - mixed, contaminated waste plastics that cannot be processed via traditional mechanic means and are instead destined for incineration, landfill and leakage into the environment. Our process, Hydro-PRT®, converts waste plastics into recycled hydrocarbon feedstocks for use in the manufacture of new plastics – creating a circular economy, eliminating the need for fossil resource in the manufacture of plastics, preventing millions of tonnes of plastic and CO2 from entering our natural environment every year and turning a $120bn lost resource of plastic waste into a valuable global commodity. We are partnering with some of the largest global companies to scale our process worldwide. Our ambition is for 1,000,000 tonnes of annual plastic recycling capacity in operation or development within this decade. The company is based in London, UK.

We are delighted to announce that Mura Technology has become the first advanced recycling company featured in the ecoinvent life cycle inventory database – a leading repository of reliable, verifiable data for analysing the environmental impact of products and services.   Following a rigorous peer review process, ecoinvent’s newly released version 3.11 database will include Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) data from our Hydro-PRT® advanced plastic recycling facility at Wilton, Teesside, UK. Inclusion of Mura’s data will allow stakeholders from the wider plastics value chain to explore confidently what advanced recycling can do to support circularity and reduction of carbon intensity.   The LCA, independently published by WMG at the University of Warwick, shows an 80% reduction in climate impacts from Hydro-PRT compared to incineration. The study also found that producing naphtha, a fossil oil-based feedstock used in the production of plastics, via Hydro-PRT had a lower Global Warming Potential (GWP) than the fossil fuel equivalent. The plastics recycling sector is at a turning point, with innovative technologies and reliable data shaping the path toward sustainability. At the forefront of this transformation is Mura Technology, whose Hydro-PRT® technology is redefining the possibilities of plastic recycling by turning hard-to-recycle plastics into high-quality, fossil-replacement hydrocarbons.   A key piece of this innovation puzzle? Trustworthy, transparent data.   In our latest blog post, we interview Dr. Geoff Brighty, Head of Sustainability and R&D at Mura, to explore how their collaboration with ecoinvent supports the integrity of their advanced recycling processes. By integrating ecoinvent’s independently verified datasets into their Life Cycle Assessments, Mura is building confidence in their technology while driving the transition to a circular economy.   This partnership exemplifies how data-driven insights can empower groundbreaking solutions to the global plastic waste crisis.   Learn more about how Mura Technology and ecoinvent are setting new benchmarks for transparency and sustainability.   ⇢ Read the full interview: https://lnkd.in/ew-9ckxN   #MuraTechnology #ecoinvent #ecoinventdatabase #sustainability #LCA #LifeCycleAssessment #plastic #circulareconomy #packaging #EfW #plasticsrecycling #advancedrecycling #plasticrecycling #massbalance #resourceefficiency #plasticsolutions #chemicalengineering #climatechange

Yesterday, as announced in the Autumn budget and following a consultation that closed 12 months ago, the UK Government took a global lead in delivering a #circulareconomy, with HM Treasury confirming that a mass balance approach for calculating the recycled content of plastics from advanced (also known as chemical) recycling sources will be implemented. Importantly, a fuel-use exempt approach has been recommended as the basis for the accounting, meeting the relevant definitions of recycling and recovery under UK and EU waste legislation. This is an important principle for the acceptance of advanced recycling to generate recycled content in future #packaging and addresses a key uncertainty in the development of the plastic circular economy in the UK.   Whilst this is a budgetary announcement, the cross-Department response by Ministers from Treasury, Defra, DBT and DESNZ also highlights UK Government wider support with the specific mention of complementarity of #advanced and #mechanical technologies. Mura looks forward to supporting Government’s next steps to bring this to full implementation, as part of the new Government’s 10-year #infrastructure #strategy. Having had support from Innovate UK's flagship Smart Sustainable Plastic Packaging programme and #FuturesFund, Mura is now in final commissioning of the first UK commercial scale advanced recycling plant. With this policy announcement, the UK is now set to take the global lead to scale advanced recycling, halting the unnecessary losses of waste plastic to energy from waste, landfill and the environment and driving a low carbon, circular plastic economy.

  • Dr Geoff Brighty discussing Hydro-PRT at the London #RecyclingExpo Mura’s hydrothermal advanced plastic recycling solution completes the circular economy, processing those plastics which otherwise could not be recycled, and would be sent to #EfW (incineration) or landfill, including flexible, contaminated and multi-layered films. Mura’s first site is under commissioning in Wilton, Teesside, North East England and will put 20ktpa of circular hydrocarbons back into circulation the #circulareconomy annually.

  • Mura Technology were delighted to welcome Professor Kevin Van Geem, Head of the Laboratory for Chemical Technology (LCT) at Ghent University, the world-leading academic institution dedicated to minimising the environmental impact of chemical processes, with which Mura recently signed a 5 year research partnership.   Mura’s Chief Technology Officer Richard Daley and Head of Sustainability and R&D Dr Geoff Brighty gave Prof. Van Geem a tour of our Wilton facility, Mura’s first Hydro-PRT® advanced plastic recycling site, which is in commissioning now and set to enter commercial operations soon.   The research partnership between Mura and LCT will involve the construction of a continuous flow, pilot scale testing facility, which will be used for a range of research programmes to evaluate hard to recycle polymers, including complex composite materials. The results will drive future technology expansions and help both Mura’s waste and chemical industry partners build the circular economy, taking waste polymers into circular, low carbon, chemical feedstocks.
