Meyer Timber offer a range of hardboard which is a high-density fibreboard made using compressed wood fibres. Its dense and robust construction makes it popularly referred to as “high-density fibreboard (HDF)”. The material is made by breaking down wood into fibres and then using heat, pressure, and a binding resin to compress them into a smooth, durable panel. it is not a particleboard, there is no grain pattern added to the hardboard which results in an even and smooth surface for paints & finishes. To celebrate National Recycling Day, we’re sharing the fascinating process of how lumber is transformed into chipboard. It all begins with truckloads of sawdust, wood shavings, and woodchips from various types of lumber, which are fed into a chopping mill. Once milled, the chips are reduced to less than 0.7mm in thickness. Next, the particles are dried to reduce humidity to 1.5%. They are then sifted to the correct size. Any leftover sawdust is used to fuel the dryers, while larger pieces are allocated to the centre of the board and finer pieces to the surfaces. The particles are then glued together and pressed into a long continuous mat. After drying, the mat is cut into boards, resulting in what we know as chipboard.
