    AI or a human conversation when you are on a website. I posted yesterday on the experience I had with a chat function with a human at the other end. I enjoyed the process and she actually made me chuckle during the conversation. Personally I am not a fan of talking to a computer. Don’t get me wrong I love AI, it’s profoundly changing my life but when I want information I want to talk to someone. Maybe I am old fashioned. Another good example for me is Amazon. If I have a problem the system tries one time to fix with AI and then pushes me to a person. Keen to know what you prefer and if you could pop why in comments even better.

  • Great post by Fraser Morrison! This is so true - give website visitors a real person and they're much more likely to buy/sign-up/give details. We get asked the same question hundreds of times a day on live chat - "Are you a real person or a bot?". When our team confirms we're real, it's amazing how it opens up the conversation and becomes more likely to be a lead/sale for our clients!

    Do you want to chat to a person or a bot? Bot of a no brainer, haha 😂 Sorry, bit of a no brainer. Its not so clear I reckon. So, to the post, you might be wondering why I'm sharing 5 screenshots of a chat about buying a Singer sewing machine. The Story Last night, my daughter Lilian told me she wanted to buy a sewing machine. She found a deal on a Singer (apparently the best brand—she knows, I didn’t) and really wanted it. Of course, she sweetened the deal by mentioning the "50% off ends tonight!" line. Classic! Being the dad I am (and a little skeptical), I did what any savvy shopper would—I found another brand on Amazon that seemed just as good, oh yeh and cheaper. But no, she had to have the Singer. I hate those sites with countdown deals, and she was definitely rushing me into a decision. But hey, I’m Scottish, and we don’t get rushed. So, I hit the chat button on the website to ask: “Will the deal still be there tomorrow?” To my surprise, a real human answered! Danielle—yes, a real person—responded with a friendly “Yes :)” and reinforced it with “It will be!” Human to human. I loved it. Then, Danielle cleverly asked which item I was interested in and offered to email me a link directly. At this point, I had to know: Is this a bot or a real person? So I asked: “Are you a real person, by the way?” She replied humorously: “Yes! :) Do I sound like a bot?” After my comment the then humanised it even more: “I am real, sorry.” She sent the link, and when I thanked her, she added a heart emoji. Simple, human, and personal to my comment. Not sure how they did this. The result? Singer got the sale. I didn’t buy the Amazon machine. My daughter’s happy and Singer has a loyal customer. The Bottom Line I believe most of us don’t enjoy talking to bots—we crave real human interaction. It’s in our nature. This applies to everything from websites, Amazon to LinkedIn and many others. What would you prefer and why?
