About us
The Marine Biological Association (MBA) is a learned society and one of the UK’s leading marine biological research institutes. Our mission is to promote scientific research into all aspects of life in the sea and to disseminate to the public the knowledge gained. In 2013 the MBA was awarded a Royal Charter in recognition of its long and eminent history and its status within the field of marine biology. In April 2018, the Continuous Plankton Recorder Survey (previously SAHFOS) merged with the Marine Biological Association, promising a stronger future for marine biology. See our website for more information.

As 2024 comes to a close, we reflect on the sea of accomplishments we've made at the Marine Biological Association, made possible by the support of our colleagues, members, partners, collaborators, suppliers and YOU - our incredible followers! 🌟 Here's a special message from our Chief Executive, Professor Willie Wilson: "Our 140th year has been one to remember. Despite record ocean temperatures in 2024, we are regularly reminded of the beauty and resilience of marine life. The MBA was founded in 1884 to understand the impact of threats facing our ocean and offer evidence-based advice to the government. Through the help of our passionate Members and dedicated scientists, we are still committed to that mission 140 years later. Together, we must find hope in our collective efforts to protect and cherish our ocean. This festive season let's be inspired to take small steps towards a sustainable future - because every action counts. Your continued support of the MBA is one of those steps, and for that, we thank you for being part of our journey!" ✨ Please note: Our offices will be closed from 23-27 December and on bank holidays ✨

💡 Got unused #marinebiodiversitydata? We’re offering up to 60,000 EUR to help you turn it into impact. The Second Open Call of the #DTOBioFlow project is now open, inviting institutions, NGOs, universities, and research groups to contribute to the EDITO - European Digital Twin Ocean by sharing your data through EMODnet Biology—the EU portal for marine biodiversity data. 🐬 Whether it’s #fish, #plankton, #macroalgae, or marine #mammals, your data can help reveal the health of Europe’s regional seas. This call aims to standardize and publish previously unavailable data and create (semi-)automated workflows for long-term integration into the #EUDTO. 💰 In return, we’re offering up to 60,000 EUR and support to maximize the value of your data, enhancing its quality and sustainability. ⌛ The deadline is February 28, 2025. 👉 Learn more and apply here: https://lnkd.in/d78W3j-r
