Due to year-round planning my clients have had hugely profitable results, with one messaging me to say that they are almost out of stock, having achieved way above forecasts. Whether it’s been a record breaker, or not quite what you’d hoped for, there’s always more to learn and space to grow. For my clients, I’m prepping their January strategy days, a time to focus on what growth means for the year ahead and mapping out the plan to get there. Broadly speaking, growth comes from more new customers, increasing the value of existing orders or the frequency of purchases or a combination of these. So how to get there? Looking at best performing (profitable) products, their customers, targeting and brand positioning. Reviewing distribution, channels and markets and opportunities for diversifying. Analysis of creative outputs and messaging. Setting forecasts and a framework for measuring success. How would it feel to have all this in place? Do you know how long it takes your customer to buy? Good news, some recent updates to Google Ads Performance Max campaigns can help. In case you missed it, you can now segment the data of your asset groups into new categories to compare and optimise. You can look at a breakdown of your results in for time, click type, network, top vs others and conversions. You can gather insights like whether people prefer to buy or mobile or desktop and which gets the highest return on ad spend. Or times or days of the week which lead to the most profitable purchases, for example if you get most sales on a Sunday or the highest ROAS on a Thursday. My favourite is ‘days to conversions’, where you can break down how many days it takes for a sale. When you’re about to hit your stretch targets. 🙌 “Such fantastic results!! I think I’m also going to hit my forecast for this month which I thought the numbers were bonkers.” Today I had this message from my client who is running ads across Meta and Google. This is our 3rd full year working together and 3rd Q4. The numbers for this month so far (not hit peak Black Friday yet, so more to come): Meta: £64K sales from £5K adspend - Average ROAS 13 Google: £56.4K sales from £4.5K adspend Average ROAS 12.4 These returns are comparable with last year, even though we were working with half the ad budget, proving that the sales have scaled sustainably & profitably. This is a product with a relatively low AOV, £30, but a fantastic offer and a great store conversion rate 5-7% The secret? There isn’t one. It’s about implementing a strategy and creative system and leaving no stone unturned to uncover opportunities for your sales, year-round. What would results like these mean for your business? “7 or 8 years ago it was easy” Said this morning on a call with a business owner, talking about Meta Ads. Time has moved on. The days of throwing something out there and hoping it’s good enough have long gone (Did they ever exist? Not on my watch!). You need to understand the numbers, the psychology of connecting with your customers and where they are in the buying journey, and the role of the AI machine. Meta has moved to algorithmic targeting. Instead of you trying to orchestrate every last detail of targeting by inputting complex interests, the machine is analysing your copy and creatives and the online behaviour of your audience to determine who you reach, and when. What you say and how you present your offer IS your targeting. Ads are also part of an ecosystem. They don’t operate in isolation. But more than that, your energy matters. Marketing is like friendship. It takes genuine effort to build and nurture all sides. You need to be committed for the long haul. Don’t be that friend who only calls when they want something. Customers smell that a mile off. Your teams need both depth and breadth of expertise. Marketing job descriptions will only get longer or teams bigger. Having someone who can create ads won’t cut it, you need a partner for growth. With a decade of wider marketing experience, I could quickly identify the gaps and opportunities for incremental gains for this business, vital to the bottom line. If you could change one thing to get more sales. Make it this. Tap into what makes your ideal customer feel seen. Competition seems fierce at this time of year and it is, but your business is unique because of you and what you bring to your customers. People buy differently now. They spend wisely. Position your products & offers to solve problems - theirs, not yours. Think of the parent who is looking to make memories without filling the house full of more tat. They want the outcome and experience, not things. Don’t put all your eggs into one basket with one-dimensional copy and automated campaigns. Using the same copy on every ad and just changing an image or video now and again won’t create growth or form deeper connections with your audience. Get real. Show evidence & proof. Always work with children and animals. Do you remember that BBC interview over Zoom with the expert and his wife frantically chasing after a rogue toddler and baby? Life has changed so much since then and now our personal and professional lives are blended. Yesterday I was live and my 7 year old who was off sick came into the room with the cat. Proof of my life as a mum running a business in action. A few years ago, I’d have been mortified, but this is who I am. I’m so proud of Not Just Mum - the book, the response, the ethos. Over the past few weeks I’ve spoken to 6 mums running epic businesses on LinkedIN lives. I’d never done one before, so what better way than to throw yourself in! Why should people buy what you have to offer? What makes you stand out? Your answer is your hook 🪝 It doesn’t matter if you’re spending £100 a day or £100,000, if your ads don’t have a good enough hook, they won’t sell. Or they won’t reach the profit or level of scale your business aims for. ❌ This isn’t calling out single groups of people hoping they’ll respond to your message. ❌This isn’t telling them why to buy your products and explaining the benefits. ❌ This isn’t telling them how great your products are, (and I don’t doubt they are. ) You need to go deeper. What makes your ideal customer feel seen so that they can’t help but react? The hook. ✅ It piques their interest and stops them in their tracks on busy platforms. ✅It makes them want to stay till the end to see the full transformation that’s coming their way. ✅ It speaks to deeper physiological triggers: emotions, problems, solutions as well as rational reasons to react. Think about your customers and what drives and motivates them and keep breaking it down. Then create your hooks and find different ways to show them in your ads.
