  • Fire Safety Reminder for Care Homes: Understanding the Updated BS 9991 Standard. Fire safety in residential care homes has always been a top priority, given the vulnerability of residents and the challenges associated with evacuation. With the recent updates to BS 9991 – the British Standard for fire safety in residential buildings, this now includes Care Homes – It’s essential for Care Homes to be aware of the expanded scope and what it means for their fire safety responsibilities. #firesafety #carehomes #BS9991

  • 🚪 The Overlooked Flat Entry Door 🚪 Take a moment to consider the humble flat entry door. For most, it’s just a way in and out of their home. But beneath its simplicity lies a remarkable piece of engineering, designed to save lives. These doors are critical to fire safety, crafted to withstand flames and contain smoke, and their ability to self-close is a key component of modern fire protection. Yet, there’s a growing issue: disengaged or missing door closers. In social housing and flats, many residents see these doors as heavy, inconvenient barriers. The result? Out come the screwdrivers, and off go the closers. How widespread is this problem? Worryingly so. A local authority in Southern England found that over 28% of flat entry doors in their survey had missing or disengaged closers. Another housing association reported an alarming 40% of doors in general needs accommodation lacked functioning closers. Survivors of the Grenfell Tower tragedy revealed that 56% of doors had missing self-closing devices, and in New York’s Twin Parks fire, a single failed door closer allowed the fire to spread uncontrollably. This isn’t just a maintenance issue—it’s a life safety crisis. A single missing closer compromises the safety of an entire building, putting countless lives at risk. It's time to recognise the critical role of these doors and ensure they remain intact and effective. It’s time to take action. At Legionella and Fire Safe Services, we’re committed to raising awareness and providing expert solutions to safeguard your property and protect lives. Contact us to learn how we can help secure your buildings and ensure compliance. #FireSafety #BuildingSafety #SocialHousing #GrenfellLessons #firedoors

  • A company has been fined £600,000 for failing to manage the risk of legionella bacteria in the water systems at HMP Lincoln, which led to the death of an inmate. A reliable Legionella compliance company should provide thorough risk assessments, implement robust control measures, and ensure continuous monitoring and maintenance of water systems. Organisations must prioritise compliance with health and safety regulations to protect employees, residents, or inmates, and mitigate the risk of costly legal and reputational damage. #legionella #waterhygiene #trust
