  • Leeds city centre enjoyed its busiest day for five years, as the festive season prompted a surge in shoppers and visitors. The highest figure since 2019 was recorded on November 30, with a total footfall of 327,346 during the second weekend of the Leeds Christmas Markets. Despite recent weather conditions, the city has seen impressive numbers during the run-up to Christmas, with more than a million people recorded between 12-15 December. It’s not just Christmas where footfall is up either, total figures across the whole year was also 1.3% higher than in 2023, with footfall at Leeds train station 11% higher than last year. Figures are measured through high tech cameras positioned at key locations across the city centre, including Briggate, The Headrow and Albion Street. • The 16 Days of Activism against gender-based violence started with White Ribbon Day on 25 November, with buildings across the city lit up orange to represent a future free from violence against women and girls. Leeds City Council is proud to be a White Ribbon accredited organisation, which means we are committed to eliminating gender-based violence and we have launched several safety initiatives, including the Night Safe Space mobile bus and the WalkSafe App. As part of the 16 Days of Activism, we're holding local events and activities to encourage everyone to take the White Ribbon promise to never use, excuse or remain silent about gender-based violence. Events have included a 'Race the Dark' marathon, which involved colleagues from across the council and White Ribbon running from Leeds to Saltaire and back before it got dark, to highlight the measures women take every day to keep themselves safe. If you'd like to find out how your organisation can become White Ribbon accredited and foster change, you can join a webinar on Wednesday 4 December (12.00-12.45) to find out more. Click the links in our comments to register for the webinar and join us in taking the White Ribbon promise 👇
