🎄 Merry Christmas from everyone at #TeamKings. This year, we started our Christmas celebrations with a grand switch-on of the #Christmas lights and trees at different hospital sites, and teams across the Trust have been decorating their wards and departments as part of our Ward Decoration Competition. We revealed the winners of our Christmas decorating contest this week, and there are some wonderful examples of staff across our hospitals going above and beyond to spread some Christmas cheer. On social media, we continued the festivities with our #KingsChristmasCountdown2024 advent calendar, highlighting key moments from our hospitals throughout the year. Additionally, we celebrated the Olar family, who have been part of King's for over 20 years. Kelsey, Ashley, and Allyson Olar have all followed in the footsteps of their mother, Aira. Aira studied nursing in the Philippines, and began her career at the Princess Royal University Hospital (PRUH) in 2001. You can read more about their inspiring story on our website: https://lnkd.in/eZ532n8j Thank you to our excellent teams working over the festive period. #TeamKings #Christmas2024 #NHS

🏆 Congratulations to Minija Joseph. Minija Joseph, Clinical Lead Nurse for Inpatient Theatres at King’s College Hospital, has won the EDI Champion of the Year award at the British Indian Nurses Association Global Awards. Minija was recognised for her outstanding work in promoting inclusivity within the theatres department at King's College Hospital. Her nomination described her as a “trailblazer” and "an advocate" for British, Asian and Minority Ethnic inclusion, breaking down barriers and fostering an inclusive culture within her team. Minija has dedicated immense time and effort to support British, Asian and Minority Ethnic staff at King's, especially International Educated Nurses (IEN) and midwives, sharing her leadership journey to help them progress in their careers'. Minija became the first overseas nurse from India to join the Trust in 2000 and has held a number of roles at King's. As a member of the Trust's South Asian Network, Minija, as part of the Race Ethnicity and Cultural Heritage network (REACH), organised a special celebration event at King's College Hospital to mark South Asian Heritage Month, which celebrated the rich history and diversity of South Asian culture. Outside of work, Minija hosts weekend and evening mentoring sessions to help IENs navigate career challenges, with her monthly webinars becoming invaluable to nurses looking to advance their careers. She is also working on a quality improvement project at Kottayam Medical College in Kerala, India. Minija collected her award at the BINA Global Awards ceremony in Leicester on 29 November. The British Indian Nurses Association (BINA) provides a voice for nurses of Indian origin within the UK healthcare system. With more than 60,000 nurses of Indian origin in the Nursing and Midwifery Council register, the BINA are creating a network of support in order to nurture and develop the skills Indian nurses have. Well done, Minija! #TeamKings #BINA #EDIChampion #NurseLeadership #SouthAsianHeritage

New interactive artwork for children with additional needs. A new interactive artwork – the first of its kind in the UK – has been installed in the paediatric department at King’s College Hospital. The artwork, called The Enchanted Forest, is designed to provide sensory stimulation as well as offer uplifting and joyful experiences to children with special educational needs and physical disabilities. Sarah Harris, Head of Nursing for Child Health at King’s College Hospital, said: “Sensory play is important for all children but for those with additional needs the stimulation can be of particular benefit. We are delighted to have been able to work with partners to enable the installation of The Enchanted Forest here at King’s. We look forward to our young patients interacting with the artwork and taking pleasure from it during their time with us.” Big thanks to Art Explora, It Is Now and King's College Hospital Charity for supporting this project and making it possible. BBC London visited King's College Hospital to speak to staff and patients on stroke recovery, the non-invasive therapy which shows promise. Stroke patients at King’s College Hospital are participating in the TRICEPS trial, a study using transcutaneous (through the skin) vagus nerve stimulation (TVNS) to improve arm and hand mobility. This £2m trial, led by Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and The University of Sheffield, will build on earlier research, which showed that when combined with stroke therapy, invasive vagus nerve stimulation improved arm recovery in stroke survivors more than therapy alone. Bill Tahtis, Consultant Occupational Therapist for Stroke and Neurology, who is leading the trial at King’s said, “We are excited to be able to offer stroke patients in the King’s area access to a trial investigating this new treatment.” “It is open to patients who have arm weakness as a result of an ischaemic stroke that happened between 6 months and 10 years ago, but still have some movement in the affected arm, wrist and fingers." This November, #TeamKings at the Princess Royal University Hospital and King's College Hospital marked #PancreaticCancerAwarenessMonth. Teams held information stalls at both hospitals to raise awareness with staff and patients. We also lit up the Hambleden Wing purple on #WorldPancreaticCancerDay to join Pancreatic Cancer Action in raising awareness on the disease. At King's, our Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic (HPB) Unit, the largest of its kind in Europe, cares for patients with pancreatic cancer. Each year, we perform around 1,000 major HPB surgeries and 10 to 12 cancer surgeries per week. We also spoke to Mr Mohamed Elmasry MB BCh, FRCS, PhD, HPB surgeon at King's College Hospital, to find out more about how we support patients. He said: "The care for pancreatic cancer is not just about surgical care, it's about the whole of the perioperative process… and the whole journey from psychological support to nutritional support from the specialist nurses, and support for the family." To find out more about how we treat patients with pancreatic cancer, visit: https://lnkd.in/ePyn-2fv #TeamKings #WorldPancreaticCancerDay #PancreaticCancerAwarenessMonth
