Most CEOs fail because they try to be indispensable. Great leadership is about making yourself replaceable. Here’s the paradox. The harder you try to stay essential to every decision, every project, and every client, the more you limit your company’s growth. I learned this the hard way. In my first leadership role, I thought being “hands-on” made me a better leader. I jumped into every meeting, approved every decision, and worked late to ensure nothing slipped through the cracks. My team admired my dedication of course, but they relied on me for everything. When I finally stepped away for a week-long vacation, everything fell apart. Projects stalled. Decisions were delayed. My team froze without my input. That’s when it hit me. I hadn’t built a business, I’d built a bottleneck. Scaling a company means scaling leadership. Great leaders don’t try to do more, they empower their teams to do more. Here’s how: Document and delegate. Create systems for repeatable tasks and delegate decision-making authority to trusted team members. Coach, don’t control. Focus on developing your team’s skills so they can thrive without you micromanaging. Plan for replacement. Always ask yourself: “Could someone else step into my role tomorrow and succeed?” When you make yourself replaceable, you create space for your team to grow, and for your business to scale. Your legacy as a leader isn’t what you do. It’s what your team achieves without you.
