I had the pleasure of moderating a panel last week with a few of my incredible clients as part of AMECs measurement month. (Thanks to my amazing panelists Megan Bagwell Stephanie Friswell, Mike Hostetler Joseph Poulos) We discussed the role data can play in both planning and measurement. Here are my Top 10 Takeaways: 1. Keep your target audience at the center of everything you do. Audience data should guide what you do, how you get there and what success looks like. 2. Performance metrics are critical to informing future strategic decisions. They tell you what works and what doesn’t and help you plan to optimize. 3. Keep reporting simple. Pick a few hero metrics that represent impact across the full funnel and report on them consistently. There is no need to boil the ocean. 4. Speak the language of the business/internal partners, don’t get caught up in communications jargon. Doing this more easily gets you a seat at the table. 5. A measurement journey doesn’t need an annual overhaul: revise and refresh rather than redo. The journey can be iterative, small steps have a big impact. 6. When communicating with stakeholders, you are the data steward, so you need to know data inside and out and the WHY behind results. 7. The “so what” is critical to making others understand the prescriptiveness of performance data and how to use it strategically. 8. Communications is as much about offense as it is defense. Showcasing impact of proactive outreach is as critical to showcasing how you keep the negatives out of the news. 9. PR doesn’t live in a silo. Report on PR results in the context of other channels. 10. AI and automation should bring speed to tracking performance and informing optimization decisions at the individual announcement level, in real time.
