PhD student Chrissie shares the 3 things she wish she knew before starting her PhD. Find more PhD tips and advice on our website: https://lnkd.in/ehRpMMZH #phdlife #phdstudent #academicjourney 📚 Project Changes My PhD project looks quite different now to what I thought it'd be when I first started. Of course my research topic is the same, but some things have changed from my initial proposal - such as data collection methods and data analysis. For example, I initially planned to do focus groups, but when I started scoping in first year, I realised that I needed to speak to people on an individual level. So I went for interviews and a survey instead. I was a bit nervous because it meant the plan I'd given to supervisors & funders had changed. But actually, as long as you have sound reasoning & can justify that these are the right things to achieve the aims of your research, it's totally fine to make changes! 🫂 Finding your people A PhD is a looong time (3.5- or 4-years full time in the UK). It often involves working alone or from home. It can be a privilege to spend your days working on your own research - but it also means being socially isolated for a good few years. But we need people! People around us to cheer us on, support us, and also help us remember there is a life outside the PhD and friendships and relationships and fun. So I wish I'd spent a bit more time early on making connections in my new city when I started the PhD - or, finding people in my discipline. (When I started my PhD the impact of covid was still very much around though, so that made it tough). 📋 Extra curricular & commitments There's a lot of stuff you can end up doing alongside a PhD - teaching, conference papers, organising events, placements, publishing, etc. But I was so keen to keep the door open to academic and do all those things, that I kind of burnt myself out in the process. which in turn meant I struggled with my thesis. I did still hold myself back - there were further things I actively turned down, and others I didn't pursue. So, to me it felt restrained because I was comparing it to what I *could* have been doing. But in reality, I did a lot alongside my PhD. And while I'm proud of my achievements, they weren't worth the burnout.
