🥊 Why marketing is such a tough gig 🥊 Whatever your level, a job in marketing is hard. In fact, CMOs have a reputation for shorter tenure than other C-suite leaders. But whyyyy is it so hard…? It’s oh-so-visible. So many stakeholders.  Everyone has an opinion.  Everyone else is an expert.  Try as you might, you can’t measure everything that matters.  You (generally) have to spend money. But you probably have a limited budget. Not to mention GARGANTUAN-SIZED targets. The trends! Oh the trends!  It’s just so vast.  And yet so nuanced. Tbh - no wonder things don’t always work out! That’s why when considering a new role, it’s worth taking your time to figure out if the company is a good fit for you. ➡️ You care about the mission ➡️ You’re excited by the day-to-day of the role ➡️ You see evidence of a supportive environment ➡️ Your new boss makes you feel valued, before you’ve even started ➡️ You see signs that the CEO shares your vision of what’s important when it comes to marketing

👋 Calling It Quits 👋 We’ve all been there. Stayed in a relationship, work or otherwise, for too long because it was easy. Or worse stayed in a toxic situation because we were scared to start over. The truth is, if we’re we no longer feeling supported, aren’t growing, have lost interest or begun acting like someone we don’t want to be (to name a few red flags 🚩) we mustn’t let tenure or pride stop us from getting out when it’s not working out. Making that call is scary, and it might not always be financially possible to do immediately.  If you do decide to move on, there are loads of reasons you should be proud of yourself. 🎢 Should you make the move to a startup? 🎢 If you are keen to experience the thrill of a startup, the real question is actually *when* should you join.  And that’s because not all stages of a startup are created equal. Those that thrive at Seed might not do their best work at Series D, and vice versa. As a rule of thumb, the earlier the stage the less structure there will be so generalists tend to thrive better than specialists.* No two startups are the same, but from our experience here’s some of what you might encounter… Shifting priorities. Neck-on-the-line deadlines.  Messy org charts.  Unclear role remits.  Pivots. Investors.  No investors.  Long hours. Diminishing runways. Pressure. With startup failure rates high, the chances of making a life changing amount of cash are stacked against you. Make the leap for the experience, not the money. And it will always be worth it! You’ll find endless opportunities for learning, and the chance to make a big impact whilst you build from the ground up. And more often than not, it’ll be a wild ride 🐯 *There are always exceptions to the rules. #startup #careers #marketingleaders

CVs are rubbish 🗑️ The first curriculum vitae dates back to 1482, when Leonardo Di Vinci allegedly penned a letter to the Duke of Milan outlining his skills. And not much has changed since… You’re expected to cram the rich story of your career and achievements onto a piece of paper (or two, but never more than that!) and hope that the person on the other side can: a) interpret what a great match you are b) avoid personal bias affecting their judgement Btw - b) is impossible Who agrees the CV is outdated? #cvtips #jobsearch
