The Community Leaders Network (CLN) of Southern Africa recently engaged with the SADC Secretariat to explore a formal partnership. This meeting introduced CLN as the regional voice for Community-Based Natural Resource Management (CBNRM) and sought pathways for collaboration with SADC, its Member States, and the Food, Agriculture, and Natural Resources (FANR) Directorate. 🤝 Key Objectives: 1️⃣ Amplifying the role of local communities in conservation. 2️⃣ Strengthening partnerships to promote sustainable resource management. 3️⃣ Building a united voice for regional and global advocacy on conservation issues. Together, CLN and SADC aim to drive meaningful change by empowering communities, shaping equitable policies, and advancing shared goals for a thriving environment and empowered communities. #CBNRM #ConservationLeadership #SADC #SustainableDevelopment #CommunityEmpowerment #GlobalAdvocacy

For Jamma and the Indigenous Peoples Network of Southern Africa (IPNeSA), COP16 was a milestone moment. We were proud to support IPNeSA’s attendance, enabling them to host a side event showcasing Indigenous-led Community-Based Natural Resource Management (CBNRM). IPNeSA also contributed to the International Indigenous Forum on Biodiversity (IIFB) statement, amplifying Southern African perspectives on sustainable use and equitable benefit-sharing. Our Key Takeaways from COP 16 CBD: 1️⃣ The establishment of a permanent global body to formally integrate Indigenous Peoples’ knowledge and practices into biodiversity policies was a landmark achievement. 2️⃣ Recognition of Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities (IPLCs) as key partners in biodiversity conservation and sustainable use has grown stronger, with their contributions now central to meeting the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework goals. 3️⃣ A decision to allocate 20% of biodiversity funds from the Global Environment Facility (GEF) to IPLCs marks a significant step toward resource equity by 2030. What now? Jamma’s Lesle Jansen, shares: “While the progress made at COP 16 is historic, sustained participation is essential to truly empower Indigenous Peoples in biodiversity governance. We must invest in long-term capacity building, strengthen regional networks, and ensure meaningful representation of diverse voices, especially women and youth.” Our Recommendations: 🌱 Formalise partnerships to institutionalise advocacy for Indigenous rights. 🌱 Mobilise resources to support Indigenous-led conservation initiatives. 🌱 Amplify Indigenous voices in global platforms through capacity building and storytelling #COPCBD #IndigenousPeople #SustianableUse #Biodiversity

👥 Community Voices on Wildlife Management at AWCF 2024 Jamma proudly supported the Community Leaders Network of Southern Africa (CLN) at this year’s African Wildlife Consultative Forum (AWCF) in Stellenbosch. Representing a large number of people across Southern Africa, CLN delivered a powerful message on the importance of community rights in wildlife management. 📢 Key Highlights from CLN’s Statement: ✔ Communities must be regarded as shareholders in wildlife resources, with guaranteed rights to income, decision-making, and sustainable economic benefits. ✔ Transparency and inclusion are critical—policies must prioritise equitable benefit-sharing and ensure communities have authority over wildlife management decisions. ✔ Direct funding to communities is essential for effective governance, conservation, and long-term sustainability. CLN also called for stronger partnerships with governments, the hunting and tourism industry, and supporting NGOs to secure community rights and foster sustainable conservation practices. 🌍 CLN’s participation at AWCF underscores the vital role of rural communities in biodiversity conservation and sustainable resource use. As CLN states: “We are taking back control of our resources and our future.” What role do you think communities should play in wildlife conservation? Share your thoughts below! #WildlifeManagement #SouthernAfrica #Sustainability
