𝐅𝐨𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐡𝐚𝐬 𝐯𝐚𝐥𝐮𝐞 𝐛𝐮𝐭 𝐢𝐬 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐩𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐜𝐞𝐚 𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐤𝐬 𝐢𝐭 𝐢𝐬. ➡ Forecasting based on triple exponential smoothing algorithms has been around for years. But it is not the panacea for stock optimisation everyone pretends it to be. ➡ The reason is that in most retailers, most products (up to 70%) sell less than 1-sku per store per week. When rates of sale are below 1 (<1 unit), forecasting adds no value. Randomness takes over at that point. ➡ For forecasting to work you need rates of sales > 1 sku per store per week. In fashion retailing where skus are at size level, that is rare. Stock optimisation therefore requires forecasting to be combined with rules based policies. Even then for forecasting to work well you need 3 factors built into UNIFY’s forecasting • Base forecasts - calculated • Seasonality – calculated but might need to be changed • Promotional uplifts – calculated based on elasticities, halo and cannibalisation effects – not always measurable. Describing, min, max and ideal parameters. Ideal is set based on backwards cover or forward cover based on forecasts. It’s very time consuming to set up and maintain and change parameters as conditions change.
