After 10 years of fruitful cross-collaboration and learning on biodiversity in the extractive industries, the partnership between ICMM and the Cross Sector Biodiversity Initiative (CSBI) has officially come to an end. CSBI was a collaborative effort between ICMM, Ipieca, and the Equator Principles Association, aimed at developing tools and guidance to enhance biodiversity management across sectors. While the CSBI website is no longer active, key resources remain available on each partner’s website: ICMM Resources: https://lnkd.in/ekpJkj_i IPIECA Resources: https://lnkd.in/euH9Mn_9 Equator Principles: https://lnkd.in/eRi6hX9 ICMM is proud of the collaboration and knowledge sharing achieved through CSBI. We remain committed to biodiversity conservation and invite you to explore the resources available through our partner websites. Thank you for your continued support in advancing these efforts.

About us
ICMM's vision is a safe, just and sustainable world enabled by responsibly produced minerals and metals. Each of our company members – which together account for one-third of the global mining and metals industry – commits to implementing our Mining Principles as a condition of membership. These principles are neither static nor do they represent the ceiling of our ambition. We are always challenging ourselves to go ever further in setting the highest of standards for responsible mining, and delivery. We promise to work collaboratively with associations and other stakeholders to enhance the contribution of mining and metals to sustainable development. Our commitment to working with others does not stop at our industry’s boundaries. We were founded on a spirit of open engagement, and we continue to champion diversity of opinions today to deliver bold leadership for our wider industry and non-resources sectors alike.

Land is at the heart of mining. At Investing in African Mining Indaba 2025, we will delve into the critical questions surrounding mining’s relationship with land focusing on questions of justice and equity, biodiversity and responsible mine closure. Join our panel session ‘Land – The essential ingredient for mining, yet also the most contested’ for a disruptive conversation on the complex relationship between mining and land. ICMM’s CEO Rohitesh Dhawan will be joined by Rio Tinto's Global Head of Health, Safety, Environment and Security, Froydis Cameron-Johansson, Elder and Former Minister in President Mandela’s Cabinet, Jay Naidoo and Phumudzo Munyai-Matshotshi, Innovation Champion for Local Economic Development at the University of Venda. 📆 Date: Tuesday 4th February 2025 📍 Location: Mining Indaba 2025, Cape Town, CTICC1 Stay tuned to our event page for the latest updates on Mining Indaba 2025: https://lnkd.in/eY5BaFSH

Effective management of emissions from diesel vehicles in underground mines is critical to safeguarding the health of the people working in these environments. Whilst ICMM’s Innovation for Cleaner, Safer Vehicles (ICSV) initiative is working to accelerate the roll out of zero-emission vehicles and equipment across the industry, diesel is expected to remain the primary source for power for vehicles and equipment into the foreseeable future. Two months ago, The Copper Mark, Mining Association of Canada, World Gold Council and ICMM shared a draft consolidated Standard, governance model, assurance process and related reporting and claims policy for public consultation. The consultation is closing today, and we would like to thank everyone who has shared their feedback. This will guide updates to the Standard that will be shared for a second round of public consultation in 2025. Subscribe to the Consolidated Mining Standard Initiative newsletter to receive the consultation report that will summarise key statistics on who responded to the consultation and the feedback received, including issues or concerns raised. For full transparency, the individual consultation responses will also be publicly available with the permission of those consulted. Subscribe here 🔗 https://lnkd.in/eatBS6Ry

It’s estimated that mining operations produce 14.4 billion tonnes of tailings waste from mineral ore processing per year – equal to the weight of 43,000 Empire State Buildings. Last September, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Global Summit on Mine Tailings Innovation, in collaboration with ICMM, convened researchers, industry experts, innovators and start-ups, manufacturers, and government and regulatory officials to discuss the need and opportunities to Re-duce, Re-use and Re-imagine tailings, highlighting the following: Reducing tailings will require advanced techniques such as smart shovels and dry stacking which require innovation and increased regulatory support. Re-using old tailings to re-mine will unlikely reduce overall tailings production but it can help meet demand for sand, cement, ceramics and even glass. Producing ore sand for instance can help replace up to 60% of sand demand in regions such as Chile. Innovating to change the mineral extraction process will be essential to re-imagine tailings production. Embracing innovation is crucial to reducing environmental and social impacts, while also meeting the increasing global demand for metals. Miss the conference in September? Research from S&P Global shows that companies with women board members have an average profit margin 23% higher than the top 100 mining companies. Yet, women still make up only 15% of the total mining workforce. Additionally, underrepresented groups - whether by gender, sexual orientation, race, or religion – are more likely to experience harmful behaviours such as discrimination, harassment, and violence. With the energy transition driving higher demand for minerals and metals, our industry must take bold steps to foster inclusive, respectful, and safe workplaces. Eliminating harmful behaviours is essential for retaining the talent needed to meet the increase in demand for metals critical to a low carbon future. Last week, ICMM took a significant step toward creating more inclusive mining workplaces by setting a collective goal to establish industry benchmarks for gender representation and equality as well as six practical tools to support the integration of DEI practices and policies and a roadmap, which sets the vision for an inclusive mining sector and provides actionable steps to drive the change needed. No job should compromise a person’s health or future. Diesel-powered equipment emits airborne particulate matter, posing serious health risks to workers. These risks are particularly acute in underground mines, where confined spaces can lead to dangerously high concentrations of diesel particulate matter (DPM). To address this, ICMM has taken decisive steps to accelerate collective action for safer, healthier underground mines. Members have adopted a new DPM performance expectation, supported by a comprehensive good practice guide. This resource aims to close existing gaps and promote consistent, effective practices across the mining sector. Learn more about ICMM’s commitment and access the guide here: https://lnkd.in/gqshNbni

It is a fundamental human need to breathe fresh air. But for millions of people working in underground mines across the globe, this is not a given. Large mining trucks and equipment currently rely heavily on diesel engines. These engines emit diesel particulate matter (DPM) — invisible particles harmful to human health. In underground mines, confined spaces can amplify DPM concentrations, exposing miners to diesel exhaust levels more than 100 times higher than daily environments outside a mine. ICMM members have committed to implement further measures to protect people working in underground mines against exposure to DPM. To accelerate this work, ICMM has also published a DPM Good Practice Guide, which provides a structured framework for companies to reduce and manage DPM exposure in underground mining operations. 🌍 On Human Rights Day, we reflect on the fundamental principle that every person deserves to be treated with dignity and respect. Businesses, no matter where they operate, have a responsibility to respect human rights. That’s why, in 2018, ICMM members committed to adopt the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights as a requirement of membership. Last month, we took another significant step by strengthening our commitments to explicitly include human rights defenders in companies’ due diligence, stakeholder engagement, and security processes. ICMM has launched three new human rights due diligence tools to support companies to: ✅ Protect and respect human rights defenders. ✅ Embed human rights across their business practices. ✅ Build awareness of the right to a clean, healthy, and sustainable environment. Together, we can champion human rights and contribute to a fairer, more sustainable future. ☀️ Learn more: https://lnkd.in/enZYmxTe
