About us
The Institute of Art and Law is an educational organisation giving knowledge and perspective on the law relating to cultural heritage a concept which includes art, antiquities, archives, archaeology, architecture, monuments, treasure and much, much more. IAL’s educational remit is fulfilled through publishing and courses. It convenes distance learning and intensive courses (both public and in-house) on art and museums law, as well as seminars, study groups and conferences in the United Kingdom and abroad. It also publishes monographs and commentaries on all aspects of the law relating to cultural heritage, in addition to a quarterly periodical, Art Antiquity and Law, now in its twentieth year. The law of cultural heritage is a wide remit: it encompasses a vast range of subject matter, from copyright and art theft, to protection of buried treasure and shipwrecks, return of human remains from museum collections, restitution of illegally exported antiquities and art wrongfully taken in time of war including Holocaust-looted, archives and religious objects, through to planning regulations protecting listed buildings and scheduled monuments, and the organisation of international blockbuster exhibitions. Internationally recognised, IAL delivers, through its educational and publishing programmes, a depth of knowledge unrivalled elsewhere.

I’m excited to share some wonderful news: not one, but two of my articles have been published in the latest edition of the Institute of Art and Law's journal, Art, Antiquity and Law. The first is my dissertation, "Art and Authenticity: The Role of the NFT", a project I worked on during my LL.M. studies at Queen Mary University of London. I owe a huge thank-you to my supervisor, Emily Gould, for encouraging me to submit it for publication — something I hadn’t even considered before. The article discusses how blockchain technology might be applied to art authentication and outlines a potential model for use in the art market. Presenting it at a conference in October opened up some fascinating discussions and I’m so grateful for the positive feedback received so far. The second article, "AI, Art and Copyright: Part II", was a collaboration with an incredible team: pierre valentin, Eloise Calder, and Stephanie Drawdy. It was a privilege to work with such talented people and explore challenges around artificial intelligence and copyright in the art world. It’s humbling to see that my first academic contributions have led to a double publication and I'm so pleased to share my ideas with the art law community. If you get a chance to read the articles, I’d love to hear your thoughts! Please also check out the other amazing articles in this issue by Lauren Gowler, Charlotte Woodhead, Clarissa Levi (Vallat), and Alaa ababneh. All extremely interesting! It was a pleasure to chat to Richard Harwood KC and Clarissa Levi (Vallat) about AI for the #ContestedHeritage podcast. As well as the references to monkeys and former Prime Ministers, as Richard mentions, we talked about the benefits and risks for cultural institutions and the manifold copyright issues which arise. On which note, it was good to see the publication yesterday of the Government consultation on copyright and AI - the conversations will continue!
LinkedIn suggested I rewrite this post with AI. I haven't, but I was delighted to talk to Emily Gould of the Institute of Art and Law about Artificial Intelligence, art and cultural institutions. Clarissa Levi (Vallat), Emily and myself have a fascinating discussion about this fast moving area, which also features a macaque monkey and Boris Johnson ... As always, on the link below or Spotify or Apple podcasts https://lnkd.in/eqaE64Ke

Thrilled to announce the release of Part 2 of the “AI, Art, and Copyright” article series, which I had the privilege of co-authoring with the brilliant pierre valentin, Stephanie Drawdy and Patrick McGranaghan. I am incredibly grateful to the Institute of Art and Law (IAL) for the opportunity to contribute not one, but two articles to their Art Antiquity and Law Journals in 2024. This has been an amazing experience, and I’ve learned so much—both from the content and from my talented co-authors. It’s hard to believe that just a year ago, Pierre and I wrote our first article on generative AI and copyright together, and since then, this legal landscape has transformed at an incredible speed. Keeping pace with these changes is both challenging and exhilarating, and I’m so grateful for the chance to contribute to this critical discussion. A huge thank you to Ruth Redmond-Cooper and Alexander Herman at the IAL for their patience and support throughout this process, especially as we all worked tirelessly to ensure the article remained as up-to-date as possible. I look forward to continuing to engage with this fascinating and fast-moving area of law—and to seeing where the conversation takes us next. "A proposed deal between the Hilma af Klint Foundation and David Zwirner gallery has hit a roadblock after it was opposed by the artist’s great-grandnephew Erik af Klint. He has described the potential agreement as a “hostile takeover” that risks commercializing af Klint’s legacy." https://buff.ly/49TuSL3

"Polish authorities have seized several works, including pieces by Damien Hirst and the anonymous street artist Banksy, stolen from the small city of Przemyśl nearly three years ago as they were being shipped from war-torn Ukraine to Switzerland." https://buff.ly/4iVlQSa

"Unesco is stepping up measures for safeguarding cultural heritage in Ukraine by granting “provisional enhanced protection” to two more cultural properties especially at risk since Russia invaded the country in 2022, bringing the total number of cultural properties given this special status to 27." https://buff.ly/4gsxdPJ

"Greek authorities heeded a call to check out the basement of an Athens building long occupied by an upper-echelon dealer of rarities such as jewelry, watches, and works of art. There, they found 102 stolen ancient artifacts, 36 post-Byzantine religious objects, and 3,247 coins, some ancient, some modern." https://buff.ly/41Rvoap

Here is a review of The British Country House Revival by Ben Cowell OBE, a fascinating history of British country houses.
