On Thursday, December 5th, 2024, the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) Pakistan Power Center organized an insightful seminar titled "Understanding the Phenomenon of Smog." This event was hosted by Dr. Fiaz Chaudhry, Senior Advisor LUMS and moderated by Dr. Mohammed Uneeb PhD CEng FIMechE, Chair IMechE Middle East & Africa. The Presenters included Mr. Atif Kamal, Senior Environment & Safety Consultant and Mr. Jehanzeb Ahmed, CEO Zebsol (Pvt.) Ltd. Mr. Nadeem Ahmad, Chemical Engineer, PE, CSP, ASP, NEBOSH, Senior Environment Consultant served as a Panelist Compared to the popular belief, in Pakistan, that source of Smog in winter emanates from burning of Crop wastes, the major contribution comes from vehicular traffic. The number of Vehicles in the last two decades have increased five fold. Within the same period, the number of trees, responsible for enhanced evaporation and rain, are decreased by 16%. Majority of the older Vehicles are still in operation. With no laws limiting the vehicular emissions, especially for the older vehicles, the situation is alarming. Pakistan is likely to become the most polluted country in the World with Air Quality Index (AQI) reaching in assess of 1000 µg/m3.       The seminar recommended strict government policies for Vehicular and Industrial emissions, promote public awareness campaigns to encourage carpooling, energy conservation, and reduced carbon footprints. Similarly, it was recommended to invest in sustainable urban planning and green infrastructure. The seminar concluded with a collective call for collaboration among policymakers, scientists, urban planners, and citizens to create a healthier, smog-free environment. Special thanks to Tahir Dawood Anwar IEng. SMRP, VA CAT-II, MLA-II , Aaraiz Khan AMIMechE, Saad Jadoon, and Umer Hayat for making this event a success. Together, we can combat smog and create a sustainable future.

Blast Furnace A blast furnace is a type of metallurgical furnace used for smelting to produce industrial metals and its alloys, generally iron, but also others such as lead or copper. In a blast furnace fuel (coke), ores, and flux (limestone) are continuously supplied through the top of the furnace, while a hot blast of air (sometimes with oxygen enrichment) is blown into the lower section of the furnace through a series of pipes called tuyeres, so that the chemical reactions take place throughout the furnace as the material falls downward. The end products are usually molten metal and slag phases tapped from the bottom, and flue gases exiting from the top of the furnace. The downward flow of the ore and flux in contact with an up flow of hot, carbon monoxide-rich combustion gases is a counter current exchange and chemical reaction process In contrast, air furnaces (such as reverberatory furnaces) are naturally aspirated, usually by the convection of hot gases in a chimney flue. According to this broad definition, bloomeries for iron, blowing houses for tin, and smelt mills for lead would be classified as blast furnaces. However, the term has usually been limited to those used for smelting iron ore to produce pig iron, an intermediate material used in the production of commercial iron and steel, and the shaft furnaces used in combination with sinter plants in base metals smelting. #metallurgicalengineering #metallurgy #blastfurnace #steelplant
