Heidi Alexander has been appointed as the new Transport Secretary at Department for Transport (DfT), United Kingdom following the resignation of Louise Haigh this morning. With a strong background in transport policy, Heidi served as Sadiq Khan’s Deputy Mayor for Transport between 2018 and 2021, where she played a pivotal role in overseeing London’s transport strategy, including challenges around funding and sustainability for Transport for London. Looking forward to seeing how the new Secretary of State will continue plans announced by the Government yesterday on a new Integrated Transport Strategy🚉🚦 https://lnkd.in/ezfNhCM6

🚦 A people-first revolution in local transport Transport in England is set for a major shake-up, focusing on local priorities, tech integration, and sustainability. The Transport Secretary outlined plans to empower councils and mayors to create tailored networks with healthier travel options and better connectivity. Louise Haigh MP said "We want to get to a place where we are making the investment in our transport much fairer across the country." 📱 Inspired by Dijon, apps could integrate public transport, hire bikes, and parking, offering seamless travel. Dynamic pricing for parking may also be used to tackle pollution. This shift aims to invest in underserved areas, especially in the north, to boost economic growth and productivity while prioritising fairness in transport access. Highways UK Live – A Legacy of Excellence The Thames has been for thousands of years London’s main route to the sea. But it is also an obstacle. The last crossing east of London is the bridge and tunnel at Dartford, and this is often congested. But a new crossing has been proposed further down the river. Throughout its planning, the focus has been on the legacy that the new Lower Thames Crossing will deliver. As we saw in yesterday’s episode of this mini-series, recorded live at Highways UK, National Highways is pushing contractors and engineers to achieve annual carbon reduction. The Lower Thames Crossing, nominated as a Pathfinder project by the Department for Transport, implements this approach. The project has aimed for continuous carbon reduction, and will be a proving ground for low carbon construction techniques. The legacy of the project will go further than reducing congestion and carbon emissions. Contractors are working with local businesses to build supply chains, and capabilities, that will live on beyond completion of the crossing. They are engaging with schools, former members of the armed forces, and prison leavers, to develop the skilled workforce needed to build the crossing. And they are striving to ensure a diverse and inclusive workplace. In yesterday's budget, Chancellor Rt Hon Rachel Reeves announced a £500m annual increase in local roads maintenance, nearly 50% more than the previous budget, to tackle potholes and restore road quality. National Highways will receive interim funding to keep strategic projects moving while we wait for the next Road Investment Strategy. Some projects, like A47 dualling, will continue, while others are now shelved. The budget also included good news for EVs and active travel with £200m for charging infrastructure, £100m for cycling and walking paths, and support for greener vehicles. Funding for EVs, active travel and road maintenance is welcome news, but there are concerns about the future funding of infrastructure initiatives, as we transition to electric vehicles without a distance-based road pricing model. https://lnkd.in/enwMz4jA
