🚨 Protect Liverpool Street Station! 🚨 Historic Buildings & Places has raised significant concerns about the latest redevelopment plans for this iconic Grade II-listed station. While upgrades are welcome, the current proposals don’t provide the clarity or justification needed for such major interventions. 🔹 Lack of Clarity: We need a clearer explanation of the operational and customer needs of the station. 🔹 Costs: A viability assessment is required to prove that the proposed tower is the minimum necessary to fund station improvements. 🔹 Future-Proofing: Building over the station could restrict future upgrades to the mainline and Underground services. 🔹 Heritage Impact: A new, comprehensive heritage statement is needed to assess the changes to the station and surrounding areas. 🔹 Design: Future designs must celebrate the station's light-filled concourse and Victorian engineering. HB&P are calling for a fundamental reassessment of the scheme. We must balance heritage conservation with sustainable, functional modernisation. We stand with the Liverpool Street Station Campaign (LISSCA) in opposing the current plans. 🖊️ Sign the petition and share with your networks to help protect this historic landmark! 🔗 https://lnkd.in/evaKJpXx 🔗 Read the full story: https://lnkd.in/eawdtAvx The Victorian Society Twentieth Century Society SAVE Britain's Heritage #LiverpoolStreetStation #HistoricBuildings #HeritageConservation #RailwayArchitecture #VictorianEngineering #Heritage #EverydayHeritage #SeeItSaveIt #SaveLiverpoolStreetStation #ArchitecturalHistory #Railways #EastLondon #London #Architecture #Planning

Built in 1905, The Victoria in Great Harwood, Blackburn is a remarkable example of an Edwardian pub with its original layout and fittings largely intact. At its heart is a stunning Art Nouveau tiled drinking lobby, featuring intricate floral motifs, dark green borders, and timber panelled ceilings. The pub’s unique “lobby plan” leads to five distinct rooms, each named in etched glass: the Commercial Room, Parlour, Public Kitchen, and Bar Parlour. The Jacobean-style staircase and former bowling green further enhance its historic charm. As a Grade II listed building, The Victoria offers a vibrant connection to Lancashire’s social and architectural heritage, preserving the leisure spaces of the early 20th century. Photos of the interior can be found on the Historic England website. #EverydayHeritage #TheVictoriaPub #GreatHarwood #Blackburn #EdwardianPubs #ArtNouveauDesign #GradeIIListed #HistoricPubs #LancashireHistory #Heritage 📷: Bill Boaden, CC BY-SA 2.0

Tavia Swain wins 2024 Stephen Croad Prize! Historic Buildings & Places is thrilled to announce Tavia Swain as the winner of this year’s Stephen Croad Prize. Her essay, ‘How did the BT Tower achieve icon status and has this been maintained into the 21st century?’, impressed the judges with its fresh perspective on a modern landmark. Tavia, a recent MA graduate from the Bartlett School of Architecture, was presented with the £500 prize at our annual lecture on 2 December. Her essay will feature in the 2025 'Journal of Historic Buildings & Places'. https://lnkd.in/dSzwQqc7 #HistoricBuildingsAndPlaces #StephenCroadPrize #BTTower #ModernLandmark #ArchitecturalHistory #BartlettSchoolOfArchitecture #EssayPrize #ArchitectureAward

Nestled behind Waterloo Station, Roupell Street is an extraordinary survivor of London’s ever-changing urban landscape. Developed in the early 1820s by John Roupell, the street originally housed working-class families. Against all odds, Roupell Street has survived centuries of change. Its unassuming brick cottages remain a powerful reminder of the city’s social history, celebrating the lives of ordinary Londoners. Today, the street is part of a Conservation Area and frequently features in film and television productions. 📷: © Des Blenkinsopp (cc-by-sa/2.0) #EverydayHeritage #RoupellStreet #HistoricBuildings #GeorgianHousing #London #History #HeritageConservation #ConservationAreas #GeorgianArchitecture

The King’s Head in Laxfield, also known as The Low House, is a remarkable example of Suffolk’s historic pub heritage. Originally a 16th-century farmhouse, it became a public house long before the 1830 Beer Act and retains many of its original features. Inside, you’ll find high wooden settles that create cosy, intimate spaces and a rare service arrangement, where drinks are served directly from casks in the cellar—one of only seven pubs in England to preserve this unique tradition. This Grade II listed pub exemplifies everyday heritage, preserving the architectural charm and social history of rural communities. It’s a reminder of how historic spaces continue to enrich local life today. 📷: © Geographer (cc-by-sa/2.0) #EverydayHeritage #TheKingsHead #Laxfield #HistoricPubs #GradeIIListed #Suffolk #HeritageConservation #RuralHistory #Heritage

🚨 Liverpool Street Station Redevelopment: We Need Your Support! 🚨 Historic Buildings & Places has submitted detailed comments to Network Rail regarding the latest redevelopment scheme for this iconic Grade II-listed station.
