Malcolm Ireland, Partner and head of our Leisure and Licensing team, is preparing for his annual January #useitorloseit campaign. Starting January 1st, Malcolm will visit a licensed premises every day throughout the month to support the licensed trade. This campaign seeks to highlight that hospitality businesses are so much more than just places that dispense alcohol, and raise awareness of the impact to a business when it’s customers don’t use it for a prolonged period of time. We’re excited to have supported The Winter Lodge in Preston with the launch of their festive Christmas market, featuring Bavarian huts offering food, drinks, and live music. Open until January 5th, the market brings holiday cheer to Friargate, making it a must-visit destination this season. Our licensing team provided legal advice to owners Nick Carter and Ryan Peak to obtain a permanent licence to set up the huts. With one in seven high street units vacant, the government has brought forward legislation in an attempt to tackle this problem and bring empty units back to life. Effective today, 2 December 2024, High Street Rental Auctions (HSRAs) will come into force in England, allowing local authorities to auction vacant properties for high-street use.
