"𝐓𝐡𝐞𝐲 𝐃𝐨𝐧’𝐭 𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐢𝐧 𝐓𝐡𝐞𝐦 𝐋𝐢𝐤𝐞 𝐓𝐡𝐞𝐲 𝐔𝐬𝐞𝐝 𝐓𝐨: 𝘙𝘦𝘷𝘪𝘷𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘛𝘳𝘢𝘪𝘯𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘰 𝘉𝘳𝘪𝘥𝘨𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘎𝘢𝘱 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘚𝘩𝘢𝘱𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘕𝘦𝘹𝘵 𝘎𝘦𝘯𝘦𝘳𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘰𝘧 𝘐𝘯𝘥𝘶𝘴𝘵𝘳𝘺 𝘓𝘦𝘢𝘥𝘦𝘳𝘴" Over the years, I’ve seen cycles of companies that have served as training grounds for leadership within the sector. When I first entered recruitment, many leading M&E contractors were headed by individuals who had trained with notable firms such as Matthew Hall, Emcor, Drake & Scull, How Engineering, NG Bailey, and Haden Young. Over time, this dynamic has evolved. Some of these companies have undergone significant changes, including restructuring, buyouts, or scaling back their training programmes. Despite this, several have remained pivotal in shaping the leadership of businesses across the industry. Haden Young, although no longer trading, continues to leave its mark through the leadership produced by the last cohorts of its training programme. Similarly, companies like NG Bailey, SES Engineering, Crown House Technologies, and Skanska have contributed to play a significant role in developing industry leaders. While other organisations have contributed, the overall quality of talent emerging from the sector has declined compared to previous generations. This is partly due to the reduction in comprehensive training programmes and the shifting demands of the industry. Many individuals are also seeking greater balance in their lives—a perspective I fully support—which has further influenced career paths and development opportunities. Now, with the industry facing an acute skills shortage, there is a renewed focus on nurturing internal trainees to address the gap. This shift reflects a recognition of the need for sustainable talent pipelines and long-term workforce solutions. As companies realign their training efforts and adapt to the evolving demands of the sector, there is hope that this renewed emphasis will not only address the challenges of today but also lay the foundation for the next generation of industry leaders. All comments are very welcome.
