So, just over four months ago we got together with some other IT leaders to define an AI opportunity radar using the Gartner established framework. See the link below. It feels like a million years ago, automation particularly utilisation of sound and video has moved at breakneck speed as has Multimodal use improving the UX no end. How has your internal thinking around AI and GenAI possibilities moved the dial for you? We are preparing to speak at the UK IT Leaders day on the 25th of September as well as doing regular sessions for clients around GenAI utilisation, we truly believe this is a revolutionary moment. If you'd like to attend the UK IT Leaders Day, see the link below 👇 If you'd like to have a one-to-one conversation about how GenAI can help your organisation create innovation and efficiency opportunities, we'd welcome a conversation. I help UK based enterprise IT Directors make their boats go faster. Delivering business innovation, accelerating time to value & helping sweat internal assets. Using JavaScript, Oracle, Microsoft Azure & AI Technologies.
It was an honour to recently chair our 2nd Birmingham Tech Leaders roundtable with my partner Mike Morgan. Bringing together some of the brightest and most relevant IT & Digital minds together in the UK. We focused on AI & Automation. 🧠 Cutting through the noise of AI evangelists and getting to the real business value is becoming harder and harder. Ethan Mollick's recent book Co-intelligence talks about just this and how we can use AI to help transform the world. We initially wanted to flesh out globally the best use cases regarding utilisation and effectiveness for enterprise businesses. We looked at three key points: 1️⃣ What are the best current opportunities for utilisation and innovation for enterprise businesses using AI and Automation? 2️⃣ What are the biggest threats that enterprises need to be aware of when using AI & Automation? 3️⃣ What are the guardrails that you need to consider when helping enterprises safeguard their IT estate? We used the Gartner AI opportunity model to help us organise the best global use cases in order of importance. The closer a use case is to the centre of the radar the more business critical it was deemed. We later used a traffic light system so that our Tech Leaders could show what use cases their current businesses were utilising and seeing value in. Green Stickers = Represented the use case being business critical. 🟢 Orange Stickers = Represented the use case being helpful. 🟠 Red Stickers = Represented the use cases not being a priority. 🔴 The group settled on 5 key areas where we believe the most value can be added from an enterprise perspective. Conversational Chat Use – We see this as a key opportunity, albeit with some reluctance to move into customer facing solutions. We have seen some high-profile disasters with the likes of Air Canada and Chevrolet falling foul of loopholes. But with the right rail guards in place this should be a gamechanger. Content Creation – Our group are already seeing the efficiencies associated with AI content creation. Document Automation – Our Tech leaders are already utilising this use case in their businesses. Although not business critical it is creating efficiencies. Code Generation –Github Copilot and ChatGPT are groundbreaking code assistants utilising AI technology. It can and should be revolutionising your coding experience. Help Threat Diagnosis and Prevention – Threats are at the forefront of every IT leaders thought process especially when using data. Using AI to help threat diagnosis can be a huge competitive advantage and bring incredible cost savings. Click the link here for the full findings: https://lnkd.in/eyR2D_nW What would you add? Team augmentation and efficiencies are at the top of IT leaders' agenda. But how is the Gen AI revolution impacting your future planning? In our latest Birmingham Tech Leaders session our final discussion in the skills chapter revolved around what the enterprise IT team of the future will look like in the next 3 years. How we created the team of the future: We created a simple framework that we believed would help us shape the skills and roles of tomorrow: Define, Build, Govern. Using our framework, each tech leader received four magnets to propose crucial existing or new roles in the AI & Automation era. AI & Automation, alongside advanced machine learning models like OpenAI, Bert, Claude, and Gemini, are evolving rapidly in their capabilities. This exercise may look significantly different next year as these technologies progress in what they excel at and where human guidance remains essential. Insights: From the session, three main insights came out. Insight 1 New skills are based on governance. Control is key whether it is around security, or the creation and implementation of specific guardrails. Naturally, CEO’s and business leaders want to ensure that with the adoption of Gen AI, that data security is number one on the business agenda. Insight 2 Prompting is seen as the new superpower, and this is reflected as roles reliant on prompting are seen in all three categories. Governance The validation of AI and automation is vital, ensuring the right prompts are used. Understanding what business value you are getting from new processes sits with this. What is the cost to the business? What’s the effort for the business? And finally, what’s the risk to the business? Define Specialists in prompting to interact with all the specific foundational models is vital. This role at least initially will become hugely sought after and expensive to recruit for. Understanding what models are best utilised for what specific tasks will become a business-critical science. Build Repeatability and incremental gains in the way we automate our processes will also play a valuable role in our enterprises. This will be no different with prompting the models. It will become an engineering discipline to ensure the results are measurable and repeatable. Insight 3 The more mature roles in IT delivery won’t be going anywhere. Enterprise challenges such as architecture, integration, security, business analysis etc. The roles around these challenges will naturally evolve but we can’t see these roles disappearing, they will remain critical.
