  • “Hands on “curriculum reform   Engaging learners of all ages in an authentic, relevant and creative curriculum experience establishes a sense of agency and active participation in their own learning. Young people are motivated to inquire more deeply and investigate projects that have meaning for them and can connect to local, national and global communities of learning. Such approaches promote critical thinking and problem-solving skills, enabling a deeper understanding across all curriculum areas and project-based approaches. Facilitating a more investigative approach for a contemporary curriculum recognises the need for more adaptable, connected and studio style spaces to support applied and “hands on learning”. It is an established approach in early years education that an immersive, multisensory learning environment, where children are active learners and explore through creative activity and play is essential. The curiosity and inventiveness of the early years’ experience needs to be cultivated and encouraged as students move through primary education. The challenge in many existing primary schools is to re-design the more traditional classroom spaces to deliver a broader, more learner focused, applied and “hands on “curriculum experience. The development of makerspaces and improved access to outside environments for all learners enhances experiential learning. Teachers and students working in active partnerships with innovative education solution providers and design professionals are creating breakthrough solutions. The current challenges are with the building of new schools to create an effective contemporary curriculum. Perhaps in the design of new schools we could all consider being more “hands on “ and design from the inside out rather than the outside in. Terry White
