As the 16 days of activism against Gender-Based Violence ends today, this report highlights the ongoing violence against women and girls in Africa and in other countries. On Human Rights Day, we celebrate the African women leaders who gathered in Dakar, Senegal, to advocate for gender equality and women's rights across the continent. Violence against women and girls (VAWG) is a violation of women's fundamental human rights, just as it is in the UK. Today is the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women and the launch of the #16DaysofActivism against Gender-based Violence: (Monday 25th Nov 2024 – Tuesday 10th Dec 2024) The theme for today is "IT STARTS WITH MEN" Men must self-reflect on societal expectations that equate masculinity with dominance, and redefine these concepts to dismantle gender-based violence. Education is vital; men should understand the impact of their actions and the importance of consent and respect. Open dialogues, therapy, workshops, and community programmes on healthy relationships can help. Men must also hold each other accountable, challenging misogyny and abuse.
