🛩️ January 1941 - BRISTOL💣💥 On the night of 3rd Jan, German bombers raided Bristol for over 12 hours, dropping an estimated 10,000 incendiaries on the city. During this raid 149 people lost their lives and a further 351 were wounded. The bombers targeted the docks and Temple Meads railway station. Buildings in Queen Square, Welsh Back, Broad Quay, Nelson Street and Redcliffe Street were damaged and the granary on Princes Wharf (and it's much needed 8000 ton contents of grain) was completely destroyed. Knowle (SE Bristol) was also hit during the raid; a 4,000lb bomb (see picture 👇) was dropped on Knowle but did not explode! The bomb, which remained buried for 2 years, was nicknamed Satan by locals. After 2 years, it was recovered and made safe, before it was later included in the 1945 London victory parade. The following night another 7,000 incendiaries fell on the docks at Avonmouth. Then, on 16th January, an eleven hour raid caused more destruction to Bristol and Avonmouth. Altogether, during WW2, there were 78 air raids on Bristol with 1,299 people losing their lives and 3,305 more people suffering injuries; not to mention the 'invisible' long term effects on everyone's mental health. Is there still unexploded ordnance buried in Bristol? Fellows International Group are here to help the construction industry, across the country, with any UXO requirements they may have with their projects. So if you have an upcoming project in Bristol (or elsewhere) and you want to know if there is a risk of finding any ordnance, please get in touch as we would love to support you. ☎️ 08000 424 424 📧 info@fellowsintgroup.com 🌐 constructionuxosupport.com And don't forget to follow us on LinkedIn. #fellowsinternationalgroup #constructionuxosupport #uxo #uxosupport #riskassessment #uxorisk #riskmitigation #construction #civilengineering #quantitysurveyors #bristol

What are they❓ Here is a great photo of an RAF ground crew fixing a smoke float to an aircraft during WW2, along with some photos of some well preserved examples Fellows found on a marine site. So what were they used for ❓ If a pilot saw either seamen in distress or another pilot who had to bale out over the sea, they would drop a smoke float nearby. This served multiple purposes: - it let those in distress know they had been seen and help will be on it's way - it enabled rescuers to find their location more easily - it provided a screen from enemy aircraft during the rescue.
