We’re proud to be part of the #CASES project. Over the next 18 months, we will work with World Players Association and other affiliates European Athletes and Players Association, Major League Baseball Players Association, NHLPA, Rugby Players Ireland to build capacity among players’ associations to support athletes who have faced #abuse 👇
On this #SafeSportDay World Players is proud to launch our #CASES Project, building capacity among player unions’ legal teams and executives to support athletes who face #abuse. #CASES is the latest development in a series of efforts underlining World Players’ and our affiliates' commitment to safeguard the long-term health, safety, development and wellbeing of players, as people and workers. Read on for more about World Players’ #SafeSport work, and how #CASES will progress 👇 💡 In 2021, World Players published research into athletes’ experiences of abuse. Our #CARE Report showed that abuse in sport is endemic and that its impact can be devastating. 🗣 We also know that many sport governing bodies’ responses to abuse have been suboptimal. Abuse has come to light not because of the proactive and responsible governance of sport, but because of the courage of victims, survivors and whistle-blowers worldwide. And those victims, survivors and whistleblowers need expert support from their unions. 👐 World Players therefore developed the #ReadytoRespond Handbook, to help player associations exercise a duty of care for athletes who are suffering effects of trauma and/or who disclose abuse or harassment in sport. Since then, more than 300 player associations’ staff have joined our training ensuring that athletes have a safe place to raise concerns with frontline union staff. ⚖ Now, the #CASES Project aims to further expand the capacity of player associations by upskilling legal teams with the specialist knowledge and skills to manage cases of abuse. CASES will also support union leadership so that they can leverage their platform and advocate for the necessary systemic changes to keep athletes safe, and create the healthy environments athletes not only deserve, but need to excel. 🤝 We are delighted to announce that the following major player associations, together representing more than 35,000 athletes across the sporting world, will be helping us refine the CASES Project as we pilot this work: Asociación de Jugadoras de Fútbol Sala Femenino (AJFSF), European Athletes and Players Association (EAPA), Major League Baseball Players Association (MLBPA), National Hockey League Players Association (NHLPA), Rugby Players Ireland, and the World Cricketers' Association (WCA). The #CASES project will be led by global sport and human rights expert Kat Craig and World Players’ Director of Sport and Human Rights Ginous Alford. It is made possible with the generous support of Oak Foundation. #SafeSportDay #TeamSafeSport #PlayersRights #EndAbuse #AthleteSafety
