I start the year with the most brutal, most intense workout of the year. It’s my annual version of the “Eat the Frog” philosophy. 🐸 Beyond the physical challenge, it’s a reminder: No matter what the next 364 days throw at me, I’ve already conquered something harder. And as a cherry on top? It’s proof that everything is possible. If I can: - Hit the gym with a slight hangover, - Complete a half marathon, and - Push through 3 hours of weightlifting... ...then the first #sales call or budgeting meeting of 2025 will feel like a breeze. A week ago, I asked my network a simple question: What is the most important element investors seek when deciding on a #startup? The results were fascinating. The majority of responses pointed to the team. No surprise there – in my experience as an ex-VC, this aligns perfectly with what I’ve seen firsthand. Investors invest in people. In fact, one of my biggest takeaways from those years in VC is this: #Venturecapital is the most people-centered industry on Earth. But as I dug deeper, I uncovered something else. Something... troubling. There’s a clear trend in who chose team versus other factors (like market or technology): - Those who prioritized the team? Senior-level professionals, experienced investors, serial entrepreneurs, or exited founders. - Those who prioritized market or technology? First-time founders, younger individuals, and those without a track record. Why does this matter? Because it exposes a critical gap in communication between founders and investors. When the two sides of the table fail to align, it leads to: - Inefficiencies in the #fundraising process. - Missed opportunities for impactful projects that never secure the support they need. Here’s the reality: Investors invest in people. The sooner a founder understands this, the faster they’ll raise their round. So, the next time you pitch: - Skip the exaggerated market size. - Avoid overhyping the tech marvels. Instead, focus on what truly matters: Why is this team uniquely positioned to succeed?
