The Scientific Foundation for Herbal Medicinal Products
About us
ESCOP, the European Scientific Cooperative on Phytotherapy, was founded in June 1989 as an umbrella organisation representing national associations of herbal medicine or phytotherapy across Europe. ESCOP's aims are to 1) advance the scientific status of herbal medicinal products, and to assist with the harmonisation of their regulatory status at the European level, and 2) to promote the field of 'phytotherapy', defined as "the science-based medicinal use of plants and preparations derived from them, in the treatment, alleviation and / or prevention of disease or injury, according to recognised standards of quality, safety and efficacy.” ESCOP Monographs provide comprehensive information in form of reviews of the therapeutic use of leading herbal medicinal products or herbal drug preparations based on scientific evidence and on leading expertise across Europe.

ESCOP is deeply grateful to Prof. Liselotte Krenn, our long-term Chair, for her incredible commitment and the many achievements she has led during her presidency. Together with a highly engaged board and dedicated scientific committees, Prof. Krenn guided ESCOP through challenging times, including the pandemic, and played a key role in ESCOP's digital transformation. Thanks to these collective efforts, ESCOP offers online monographs, a regular newsletter, and a strong presence on LinkedIn. Six well-received webinars have also been organized, with Prof. Krenn personally presenting the first in 2021 on the science and evidence behind Cranberry. Her expertise and leadership have significantly enriched ESCOP’s monographs and scientific publication track record. We thank Prof. Krenn and the entire ESCOP team for their remarkable contributions to advancing ESCOP’s mission! We are delighted that Prof. Krenn will remain an active board member.
