Our QUIC 2024 Q3 #UKELT student statistics are out! This summer, English UK member centres participating in QUIC - our quarterly statistics scheme - recorded 75% of the student weeks seen in the last pre-pandemic summer of 2019. Recovery has slowed since the first six months of the year, when 81% was achieved. In a maturing industry, with student numbers static or falling, it is quite possible that these figures represent 'a new normal' where destinations compete for a stable or shrinking pool of students who want to study English abroad. 'Overall, we expect 2024 to be on a par with 2023 but not exceed it,' said Jodie Gray, our chief executive. 'We are considering 2023/2024 as the new normal with figures unlikely to return to pre-pandemic highs or trends.' Suzanne Sparrow: 100 years old and still involved with her language school >> She waved the Americans off to D-Day in 1944, founded her pioneering #ELT school in 1978 and was wished a happy 100th birthday in Parliament by her local MP. Not only has Suzanne Sparrow led a long and extraordinary life, but she's still involved in the running of the Plymouth school that bears her name. 'I have had an extraordinarily interesting and very happy life. I have been very lucky and life has been kind to me,' she reflects, from the home office where she stays in touch with the school now run by her daughter Hilary Desvernay. A message of hope >> The 2023-24 impact report 'Hope' from our partner charity, RefuAid, shows English UK members have helped a record number of refugees build new lives in the past year. The report shows a dramatic increase in the number of students supported by our members. Around 160 Accreditation UK centres have offered free tuition to RefuAid clients, with 819 supported in the last year – an increase of 37% from 2022-23. 🙏 Thank you to all our members who are working with RefuAid. Could you accommodate more RefuAid clients in 2025? Or maybe you don't work with RefuAid but are keen to learn more. Contact Ilaria Tarulli, head of RefuAid's language programme, for more info on how to get involved. #WeAreOne #UKELT Read more and download the impact report >> bit.ly/3APBAEZ
