  • 📣 Dive into the blog linked below to discover how we're empowering women entrepreneurs in Senegal to transform their livelihoods through clean energy solutions! 👇

Our partner @MercyCorps is leading a transformative initiative in Senegal that empowers women entrepreneurs through clean energy. The Foyré Rewbé 3 program, supported by @ENERGIA and funded by @Sida, is promoting women’s economic participation in key sectors like dairy, fisheries, and agriculture. By integrating clean energy solutions into these industries, women are gaining access to productive tools that improve efficiency and sustainability. One inspiring leader is Bodiél Sow, founder of the Women Producers Cooperative of Potou. Her work has provided over 2,000 women with access to solar-powered equipment, transforming their farming practices and boosting community resilience. Through training, partnerships, and policy advocacy, Mercy Corps is breaking down systemic barriers and enabling women to thrive as leaders in climate-smart development. In 2024, Mercy Corps formed the "Gender and Energy Task Force," a powerful coalition that advocates for gender-equitable clean energy policies in Senegal. 💡Powering off-grid communities: Zonke Energy's solar-powered solution💡 Millions of people in South Africa live without access to safe, reliable electricity. 🔌Informal grid connections can be dangerous, expensive, and are often located in areas that can't be easily electrified by the government. Zonke Energy, is tackling this challenge and providing clean and reliable energy with its solar mini-grid solution.☀️ With support from @Energy Catalyst, Zonke Energy has developed proprietary technology and launched a pilot project in South Africa, where mini grids utilise solar towers to provide clean energy that can power homes, charge phones, and run appliances. 🏡📱📺  How does it work? ☀️ Solar towers harness the sun's energy   ⚡️ Safe, low-voltage power is distributed to local homes  📱 Customers prepay for electricity using their mobile phone or vouchers   📊 Usage is tracked for transparency  Zonke Energy's ambition is to work with the government to model and implement off-grid energy solutions that can bridge the energy access gap for off-grid communities.🤝 Click to learn more about Zonke Energy below👇 Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, Ayrton Fund, The Carbon Trust, Transforming Energy Access, Innovate UK, Energy 4 Impact #Solar #Renewable #Energyaccess

  • Last month in Freetown, Sierra Leone, we convened clean cooking innovators, finance providers, local authorities, and sector influencers to explore a transformative concept: how combining clean cooking and financial inclusion can empower economically disadvantaged women. It was an exciting milestone for our Financial Inclusion for Clean Cooking in Rwanda and Sierra Leone (FICCARS) program, which enables women from informal settlements to purchase sustainable cooking solutions on credit. The impact is compelling: clean cooking alleviates the labor and health risks of cooking with biomass whilst serving as a ladder to economic opportunity. Buying stoves on credit helps low-income women build a financial track record, improving their access to life-changing loans and services in future — and unlock livelihood opportunities. The rich potential to replicate this approach across Sierra Leone provided stakeholders with plenty to consider. Amongst the presentations, our partners, microfinance provider MiKashBoks and LPG distributor Afrigas (SL) Ltd, shared insights into how they work together within FICCARS. Cooking companies and finance providers from outside the program then demonstrated their impressive range of solutions, sparking conversations about collaboration and scalable impact. Heartfelt thanks to the Renewable Energy Association of Sierra Leone (REASL) for co-hosting this event, as well as our implementing partners codohsapa sierra leone and FEDURP. #cleancooking #financialinclusion Mercy Rose Jersey Overseas Aid LAPO Microfinance Munafa Women in Energy Sierra Leone Limited VC4A

🌍 Key takeaways from last week’s #REAPowerChat Our Head of Energy Research and Innovation Mercy Rose joined a thought-provoking discussion hosted by Rural Electrification Agency of Nigeria, which explored how to align the promotion of productive uses of energy (PUE) with national electrification strategies. Amongst other topics, the conversation shed light on why community-focused approaches are vital for success:  ✔️ Beyond infrastructure: PUE initiatives demand a deep understanding of local contexts, customised solutions, and meaningful community involvement.  ✔️ Ecosystem development: To unlock the full benefits of PUE, communities need access to flexible financing, maintenance services, and market linkages that improve long-term impact. 🎥 Want to dive deeper? Check out the video linked below for more insights from this session. At Energy 4 Impact, we’re excited to support community energy cooperatives in Nigeria by turning insights like these into actionable strategies that empower local populations and advance sustainable development.

🗣 The #REAPowerChat On this edition of the #REAPowerChat, we explored practical perspectives on the critical role that Productive Use Equipment (PUE) play in driving social and economic development in last-mile communities. As the REA continues to expand its renewable energy footprint nationwide, the Agency is, in the same vein, working in lockstep with key stakeholders on the frontline of innovative models on PUE for sustainable growth and improved livelihood in Rural Nigeria. The Agency, on Monday the 25th of November, 2024 hosted four (4) professionals who extensively shared their perspectives and experiences on the intersection between #energyaccess and #PUE.
