"Dr Akolawole Ayonrinde Award for Outstanding Contribution to Community Mental Health Care in Nigeria". At the prestigious 55th Annual General & Scientific Meeting of the Association of Psychiatrists in Nigeria, holding in the historic city of Ilorin, Kwara State— a momentous occasion took place as Dr. Timothy Adebowale was honored with the inaugural “Dr. Akolawole Ayonrinde Award for Outstanding Contribution to Community Mental Health Care in Nigeria.” This award stands as a tribute to the late Dr. Akolawole Ayonrinde, a pioneering force in community mental health services in Ogun State. Dr. Akolawole Ayonrinde devoted his life to the noble mission of enhancing community mental health services, establishing a foundation for a more compassionate and inclusive approach to mental health care across Nigeria. His steadfast commitment to serving humanity has inspired countless individuals in the field, making it entirely fitting that this award bears his name, reflecting his enduring spirit and relentless pursuit of improved mental health outcomes for all. In presenting the award, Dr. Deji Ayonrinde, an Associate Professor of Psychiatry based in Ontario, Canada, honored his father's memory and vision, seamlessly linking the past to the present in a poignant celebration of service and dedication. Dr. Timothy Adebowale's receipt of this award acknowledges his exceptional contributions to mental health, highlighted by his pioneering work at the Neuropsychiatric Hospital Aro in Abeokuta and his impactful community initiatives through the Hope Restoration and Health Initiative. His innovative strategies and tireless efforts have profoundly transformed the lives of many, particularly among vulnerable populations. This award not only commemorates the lasting legacy of Dr. Akolawole Ayonrinde but also emphasizes the ongoing commitment of individuals like Dr. Adebowale, who tirelessly advocate for mental health awareness and support for those in need. As we celebrate this significant moment in Ilorin—a city that stands as a beacon of hope and compassion for its citizens—we honor both the enduring influence of a remarkable pioneer and the promising future of mental health care in Nigeria, fueled by the unwavering dedication and compassion of those who continue to follow in his footsteps.

  • ✨ Throwback to Sparks Meet-Up 2023 in Nairobi! Last year, we joined forces with Segal Family Foundation and Fondation d'Harcourt to bring together an inspiring group of global mental health champions — grassroots organisations, funders, and philanthropists — to delve into the theme of Sustainability, Impact & Wellbeing. The meet-up was a vibrant exchange of ideas, strategies, and lived experiences. From exploring ways to scale community-led solutions to emphasising self-care for those driving change, it was a powerful reminder of the strength in collaboration, creativity, and resilience. A year on, the insights and connections continue to inspire us! 💡
