  • We're proud to have established #rewilding as a core purpose of our business way back in 2013, and it's STILL the heart of our mission today. Our aim is to rewild 50% of the planet by 2050. It's ambitious, sure, but with the help of the global community, we believe it's possible. We don't just hope for the best, though - hope is valuable, but it needs to be paired with a pragmatic strategy to deliver results. So, we came up with guiding values that would help push us towards this long term goal. These values are what we look for in new employees and partners, and what we strive towards ourselves: Desire to learn We are open-minded and innovative. We are eager to expand and share our knowledge, being excited rather than daunted by new opportunities to learn. Committed and tenacious We are willing to keep trying each and every day, seeking ways to help nature recover and improve people’s lives. We will continue to find ways do this, even when faced with failure, because we believe that even in times of adversity it is possible to find great success. Creative problem solver Our team has a solutions-oriented mindset. However, we don’t just present creative ideas – we run with them and turn them into a reality. It's important to us, as a team, to pioneer at the cutting-edge and to ground transformational change. Being pragmatic Our ambitious purpose is underpinned by a practical and pragmatic approach. Our confidence is grounded by experience and technical expertise, so we can put our broad knowledge into practice in unique ways. Do the right thing We aim to lead by example, in terms of our values, company ethos and purpose. We know that living sustainably isn’t easy – but we are aware of our responsibility to do so, and are determined to make this a reality. Are these values are in harmony with your own? If so, why not take a deeper look at our website - perhaps we have a role for you, or maybe we could be the perfect partner for that next big project? Could you help us on the way to rewilding half the planet? Find out more at https://ecosulis.co.uk/ #ecology #biodiversity #environment #greenfuture #climateresilience

It’s been a year of incredible progress, guided by our mission to rewild half the planet by 2050. This year has been defined by bold strategies, transformative projects, and an unwavering commitment to creating a thriving future for both people and the planet. At the forefront of our journey was the strategic vision laid out by our Senior Leadership Team: to stay agile in a rapidly evolving world, whilst staying true to our core values: Desire to learn  Committed and tenacious  Creative problem solver  Be pragmatic  Do the right thing. In 2024, we deepened our commitment to integrity-driven reporting and advanced climate and biodiversity action, through cutting-edge innovation and research. Collaboration has been the cornerstone of our success. We have had the privilege of partnering with inspiring organisations, each driving incredible work in their respective fields. These collaborations enriched our projects and strengthened our shared impact, and we’re eager to build on this momentum in 2025. This year also reminded us of the awe-inspiring beauty of nature. The Conversation UK - Peatlands urgently need to be restored for UK to meet emissions targets The overall goal for the UK Peatland Strategy is to improve 20,000km2 (2 million hectares), of UK peatland by 2040 through restoration, sustainable management, or preservation. The UK has 30,000 km2 of peatlands, 80% of which are in poor condition, emitting 20 million tonnes of CO2 annually due to degradation. Restoring peatlands avoids further emissions, and restores ecosystem functions like flood risk reduction, and water purification and increases biodiversity. 🌱 Progress: Since 2018, 2,550 km2 of peatland has been restored Peatlands included in national strategies for Scotland, England and Wales Legislative progress: bans on burning deep peat in England (2021), and upcoming restrictions in Scotland (2025) The peatlands of Scotland’s Flow Country, the world’s largest and most intact expanse of blanket bog, was recently designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The way peatland landscapes are being managed is also advancing – paludiculture is a way of farming that allows groundwater to remain near the surface, recent trials have shown promise in the UK. 🌱 Challenges to restoration There are funding gaps – public funding is insufficient and private financing schemes like carbon credits are underdeveloped. There are still no universally agreed definitions of “peatland” or “restoration”, so eligibility for different various environmental schemes that allow landowners to fund restoration can be confusing. There is currently limited capacity for monitoring and no centralised system for recording restoration progress. There are several policy shortfalls inhibiting peatland restoration. Despite £318M investment, no UK government has banned peat extraction and the promised ban on horticultural peat sales remains unfulfilled. ☺️ However, there is reason to remain hopeful! There has never been such a prevalent awareness of the need to protect and restore these landscapes as well the increased knowledge built over the last 5 years. Political will and funding sources are growing but they need scaling up. Ecosulis is proud to be partnering with organisations in the UK to help restore these landscapes. By leveraging our expertise in nature restoration, innovative monitoring techniques and land management skills we can deliver peatland restoration projects of all sizes. Check out the full article for more information: https://lnkd.in/etiUpK_Y Below is a clip of an excavator wobbling around on some peat The whole area was wobbling like a waterbed, because in effect that's what peat is - a squishy water-dense medium with a smattering of organic matter. #PeatlandRestoration #RestoreWhatMatters #NatureBasedSolutions #Biodiversity #PeatlandConservation

  • This time of year it is very easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle of the Christmas period. With endless to-do lists, busy schedules and the pressure to get everything 'just right'. It's so easy to forget about ourselves. This is a time of year where many things are waiting, poised to emerge in the spring. Whilst it may be grey outside at the moment, this is your reminder to step outside, breathe in the crisp winter air and remember that greener, brighter, warmer times are coming. #Wellbeing #NatureConnection #MentalHealth

  • 🦌 A Festive Tale of Reindeer and Rewilding 🎄 Reindeer once roamed the British Isles, but by the 12th century, they were lost to local extinction, as chronicled in ancient texts like the Orkneyinga saga. Unlike the woolly mammoth or cave lion, reindeer survived globally and were reintroduced to Scotland in 1952. Thanks to the vision of Mikel and Ethel Utsi, seven reindeer from Sweden found a home in the Cairngorms, sparking one of the earliest rewilding success stories. Today, a managed herd of around 150 reindeer thrives across 6,000 acres, proving that with care and collaboration, rewilding works. Whilst it would be fantastic to reintroduce the Wooly Rhino, Cave Bear or other extinct megafauna, these species are all globally extinct and the closest modern match is not the same hence we find taxonomic replacements for them such as the Eurasian brown bear or Tauros. Reindeer, however, presents a different case. With thriving global populations and significant support for their reintroduction in the UK, they offer a unique and feasible opportunity for rewilding. 🦌 Reindeer fact file 🎄 In North America they're called Caribou, whereas in Europe they're known as Reindeer - they are the same species: Rangifer tarandus. 🎄 They can vary a lot in colour, ranging from grey to dark brown depending on geography and season. 🎄 They are the only large mammals that are able to digest lichen due to having specialised bacteria in their gut. 🎄 Their large hooves act as the perfect snowshoe as they are crescent-shaped and splay out nice and wide to keep them steady. 🎄 They live in large herds of usually a few hundred but can form super-herds of 50,000 to 500,000 during spring migrations. 🎄 Due to living in the Arctic where the length of the days and nights differ so greatly, Reindeer have lost their circadian rhythm. 🎄 They are the only deer species to have been fully domesticated. 🎄 Both males and females have antlers but they grow and shed at different times. Males start to grow them in February and tend to shed in November and females begin to grow them in May and are not shed until February. This means that only the females have antlers in December meaning Santa's sleigh is actually pulled by a team of strong independent women! #FestiveFacts #Rewilding #Conservation #Cairngorms

  • As you might have seen from our previous posts, we have been working on a peatland restoration project in Matterdale, Cumbria. The team has tackled a range of techniques in a range of weather conditions. Some of the techniques we have used: ▪️ Hag reprofiling ▪️ Peat and stone dams ▪️ Timber dams ▪️ Bunding ▪️ Zippering ▪️ Wave damning 🌟 Some highlights of the project so far: 🌱 Seeing water already pooling behind the bunds and dams setting the stage for the BeadaMoss, Sphagnum moss to thrive. 🤝 Collaborating with Cumbria Wildlife Trust, Cumbria Peat Partnership and the National Trust. 🐶 The site team have been fortunate to welcome a couple of furry visitors during their days on site which is always a highlight. ☺️ Engaging with the local community, receiving both support and interest in our work, which is crucial to the success of a project. ❄️ With a sprinkling of snow blanketing the landscape, it looks like the Christmas card design is done and dusted. Despite challenging weather (-7.5°C air temps, -10°C with wind chill!), snow, and wet boots, the team persevered, with special thanks to our machine operators Tom Lindsay, Jack and Craig Peart for their amazing work. 📸 Matthew Powell/Ecosulis #PeatlandRestoration #CommunityEngagement #Partnerships #SphagnumMoss

🌊 Exploring an NFM wetland project in Cinderford 🌲   On Wednesday, we had the privilege of visiting a Natural Flood Management site in Cinderford with an incredible group of colleagues and partners to see the progress of the wetland restoration work we've been involved in over the autumn months.   Accompanied by Liam Reynolds from Severn Rivers Trust, our MD Suzi Cross, Senior Site Manager Lyndon Meakins, Head of Marketing and Partnerships Kate Miller, and Project Manager Jasmine Newton and not forgetting special guest, Winnie the labrador, we explored the transformed landscape.   Along the way, we were greeted by the vibrant wildlife that calls this area home, including a wild boar, several jays, and other bird species, alongside warm greetings from friendly locals enjoying a morning walk.   Moments like these highlight the importance of wetland restoration—not just for biodiversity but also for community and connection. Huge thanks to the team for their dedication and to Liam for showing us around the site!   #WetlandRestoration #Rewilding #Biodiversity #Partnerships #Ecosulis
