  • On October 30th, the UKHSA announced the detection of the first mpox Clade 1b case in the UK, followed in the subsequent days by three additional cases arising from the same household in London. (1) The World Health Organization declared mpox (MPXV) a public health emergency of international concern, following outbreaks in the Democratic Republic of Congo and other African nations (2), with subsequent outbreaks detected in Thailand, Germany, Sweden, and India (3)(4). For mpox sample collection and transport, E&O Laboratories produces Molecular Sampling Solution (MSS), a reagent formulated and validated for the inactivation and transportation of specimens potentially containing a wide range of viral and bacterial pathogens, including mpox. MSS is designed to disrupt microorganisms, denature proteins and nucleases and facilitate transportation of viral samples at refrigerated and room temperatures prior to testing. Viral nucleic acids remain stable in MSS at room temperature for at least 14 days. By using MSS, infection hazard is reduced during transport and laboratory processing whilst preserving nucleic acids for identification by PCR or other nucleic acid techniques. MSS has a shelf life of 2 years from manufacture. MSS transport tubes are also compatible and validated for use with automated laboratory platforms. MSS is available in the following products:- 𝗦𝗪𝟬𝟬𝟬𝟰-𝗠𝟬𝟰𝟯-𝟮 𝗠𝗦𝗦 𝗦𝘄𝗮𝗯 𝗞𝗶𝘁 Comprises a transport tube of MSS (2ml fill) with red swab-capture cap, and a sterile small viscose tipped polystyrene swab with 78mm break-point, all encapsulated in an easy-peel pouch. The swab may be used to collect samples from areas including (but not limited to) the skin, nose, throat, anus and vagina. The swab is not suitable for nasopharyngeal sampling. 100 kits per box. 𝗕𝗠𝟭𝟲𝟳𝟳-𝗠𝟬𝟰𝟯-𝟮 𝗠𝗼𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘂𝗹𝗮𝗿 𝗦𝗮𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝗦𝗼𝗹𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 (𝗠𝗦𝗦) Tray pack of 50 red-capped MSS tubes with 2ml fill. 🌟 Congratulations to the brilliant Sana Tansey - MSc of the Department of Medical Microbiology at Galway University Hospitals for receiving a distinction ribbon for her outstanding poster presentation on 'The Verification of EUCAST Antibicrobial Susceptibility Testing for Anaerobes in Disk Diffusion' during #LabCon2024! 👏 E&O Laboratories Ltd.'s Fastidious Anaerobic Agar with 5% Defibrinated Hosre Blood (code PP1564), provided by Syntec Group, played a key role in verifying the newly released EUCAST methodology and breakpoints for AST of anaerobic bacteria. 🏆 Key Achievement: The implementation of this method has significantly reduced the turnaround time for AST results—from 14 days to just 24 hours! This method has now been adopted for routine use in the Department of Medical Microbiology at GUH, enhancing patient care. If you have any questions on the FAAw5%HB (code PP1564) media used, or would like to try some of this media out in your lab, please get in touch 📧 sales@syntec.ie . Thanks again to The Academy of Clinical Science and Laboratory Medicine for organizing such a fantastic event! #AntibicrobialSusceptibilityTesting #MedicalMicrobiology #AnaerobicBacteria #FastidiousAnaerobicAgar #PatientsFirst #CultureMedia

  • Detect, Differentiate & Identify Candida.spp including C. auris with ColorexTM Candida Plus. First identified in 2009 in Japan, Candida auris has subsequently been identified across the globe in over 40 countries, becoming a major health threat with the WHO grading C. auris as a “critical priority pathogen”. (1) C. auris infections are commonly detected in the bloodstream and have also been associated with infections in bones, cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), and the intra-abdominal region. Additionally, the organism has been isolated from various sources including wounds, ear and respiratory specimens, urine, bile, and jejunal biopsies. (2) Candida auris impacts both adult and paediatric populations, predominantly within high-risk healthcare environments and especially in critical care settings like intensive care units. Studies that screen patients upon admission have revealed that C. auris has a strong tendency to spread within hospital settings, suggesting that many infections are acquired during the course of medical care rather than being present before hospitalisation. Additionally, C. auris has been detected in long-term care facilities in the U.S., with the highest colonization rates observed in long-term nursing facilities that provide ventilator support. C. auris is known for its ease of transmission between patients within the clinical environment, often through the use of shared equipment. This highlights the crucial importance of implementing timely, efficient, and continuous infection prevention and control (IPC) strategies, including screening for C. auris. (2) Addressing this need, ColorexTM Candida Plus (E&O Product code PP3018-P090), has been developed for the detection and differentiation of major clinical Candida spp. including C. auris from a wide variety of other related and non-related yeast species. It is especially useful as a screening tool to identify suspicious colonies from mixed cultures. When cultured using Candida Plus, C. auris is readily distinguishable from other common Candida species as it forms blue colonies with a blue halo, whereas C. albicans forms green-blue colonies, C. tropicalis produces metallic blue colonies with pink halo, C. krusei elicits pink fuzzy colonies and C. glabrata forms mauve colonies. PP3018-P090 ColorexTM Candida Plus comes ready-to-use in packs of ten and has a shelf life of 70 days from manufacture. • MicrAlert - E&O Laboratories’ new range of reagents, specially formulated to rapidly detect surface-borne pathogens in food manufacturing and processing environments. MicrAlert is a simple 2-Stage surface pathogen detection workflow: Stage 1: Sample the surface using the Neutraliser & Swab Kit. Each convenient thermoformed peel-pouch contains a swab for sample collection and a tube of Neutraliser solution. Dip the swab into the Neutraliser and then sample the area for analysis. The Neutraliser inactivates disinfectant residues that may remain after cleaning allowing the recovery of viable microorganisms1. Stage 2: Place the sample swab into an indicator tube, snap the swab shaft at the line and re-cap the tube. Incubate sample swab in indicator tube for the prescribed time. An obvious colour change alerts you to the presence of the target pathogens, with presumptive positive identification of pathogens available in 24-26 hours. Positive indicator solutions can be confirmed if required by subculture onto appropriate chromogenic plates and incubated as per guidelines for the media. SW0006 micrAlert Neutraliser Kits are available in boxes of 100 kits. BM0014 micrAlert Listeria, BM0015 micrAlert Salmonella and BM0016 micrAlert Coliforms indicator reagents are available in shrink-wrapped trays of 50.
