Join me on the podcast this week where we talk all things ginger! #241 Ginger. The science and health benefits of this wonderful spice From blood sugar and gut health to inflammation, ginger has many people espousing its benefits. There are tons of folklore remedies using ginger for indigestion, headaches, infections. But is there any science to back this up? In the Doctor’s Kitchen we want people to learn about the history of food, the nutritional benefits of ingredients so everyone can make an informed decision about their diet Whether you choose to include more or less ginger in your diet is completely up to you, but I hope we can help our healthy foodie listeners to appreciate the science of this incredible spice. Despite the poor evidence or lack thereof in some cases, there are some intangible benefits with all foods whether the science is there or not. Foods evoke memories, which impacts our emotions, our psychological states. There are many things that we can’t determine through looking at a clinical trial in isolation. So don’t be disheartened and remember to be intuitive about what you feel works for you I do love cooking with ginger for its health and flavour properties. I add it to curries, stews and teas. And as we look to the science and discover more about its health benefits, I think you’re going to be inspired to use it more regularly in your diet too. 🎬 Watch the podcast on YouTube here (https://lnkd.in/eQxD7t2D) 📱 Download The Doctor’s Kitchen app for free* (https://lnkd.in/eyjhPbxF) 🌐 View full show notes, including guest details, on our website (https://lnkd.in/gfinuWcT) *The Doctor's Kitchen App gives you access to all of our recipes, with specific suggestions tailored to your health needs and new recipes added every month. On the podcast this week - something I'm asked about a lot - honey! #239 Should You Eat Honey Every Day? Honey has been used for millennia as a medicine. And even to this day, people swear by it for treating viral illnesses, espousing the antibacterial and immune enhancing effects. But is there any evidence to support this? And if honey is largely made up of just sugar molecules, how can it have these miraculous effects? Todays episode is a deep dive into what honey is, the chemical make up of honey and a look at some of the studies that have examined gut health, immunity and metabolic health benefits. I’ll reveal whether I think it’s worth taking a spoon of honey every day. On another episode for YouTube I’m going to discuss how to choose the best honey, how to spot fake honey on supermarket shelves, as well as taste test different honeys available in supermarkets and online. We've released a BONUS EPISODE of the podcast today: “Capsule Pantrys” & Unreasonably Delicious Food Anna Jones is on the podcast today, one of my absolute favourite cooks! Her food and ethos around injecting flavour are so aligned to my way of eating and it was a joy to host her on the pod. Anna is a cook, writer and regarded as the voice of modern vegetarian cooking. She’s written favourites such as “One: Pot, Pan, Planet”, “A Modern Way to Eat” and many more that are always on a foodies kitchen counter. In her latest book “Easy Wins”, Anna takes 12 hero ingredients that are guaranteed to make your food taste great, such as lemons, olive oil, onions, peanut butter, mustard, tahini. Most of you ‘Doctors Kitchen Foodies’ probably have these in your fridge or cupboards. And Anna has masterfully created meals that use them to boost the flavour and versatility of home cooking. The so called “Capsule Pantry”, which we explain at the start of the podcast is an awesome concept. And I’m going to start thinking about what would be in my own capsule pantry! I hope you enjoy this wonderful conversation and you’ll be able to catch me cooking with Anna on our YouTube channel too! 🎬 Watch the podcast on YouTube here (https://lnkd.in/eQxD7t2D) 🌐 View full show notes, including guest details, on our website (https://lnkd.in/gfinuWcT) You can download The Doctor’s Kitchen app for free (https://lnkd.in/eyjhPbxF) to get access to all of our recipes, with specific suggestions tailored to your health needs and new recipes added every month. On the pod this week - #237 Get Better Sleep with Dr David Garley I’m always on the search for better sleep. I’ve tried supplements, better pillows, meditations but there always appears to be a day or 2 in my week where I don’t sleep well. And on the one hand, I was pleased to find out that that’s about average and that’s not particularly abnormal, but I still want better sleep. Today, Dr David Garley is on the podcast, he works as a GP in Bristol and is director of The Better Sleep Clinic. He treats a wide range of sleep disorders, mainly working with insomnia and obstructive sleep apnea and sees first hand the impact that poor sleep can have on physical and mental health. But he also started his medical career in respiratory medicine, that we get into at the start of the podcast. We talk about: Warning signs of poor sleep and its detriment to lifespan The systems that control sleep How we can manage jet-lag The effect of light on circadian rhythm What to do when you can’t sleep Whether sleep supplements are worth it And if there is a diet for sleep? Today's podcast release: #236 Cloves. Nature's Natural Medicine? With Dr Rupy Aujla A lot of relatives have told me in the past about chewing cloves everyday. It’s part of a habit for some people and a traditional cure for toothache and gum disease. But, depending on who you speak to, the benefits extend to the digestive system, inflammation and even longevity. So here at the Doctor’s Kitchen we decided to do a deep dive into this wonderfully strong spice that we use often in recipes such as broths, stews and of course biryani. Here are the things you need to know It’s a potent spice that at the very least, contributes more polyphenols and diversity to your plate. The chemicals found in cloves are particularly interesting It is linked to many beneficial properties, especially antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial and analgesic benefits but human trials are lacking. Whole cloves are generally considered safe but clove oil or supplements need to be used with caution. 🎬 Watch the podcast on YouTube here (https://lnkd.in/eQxD7t2D) 📱 Download The Doctor’s Kitchen app for free (https://lnkd.in/eyjhPbxF) 🌐 View full show notes, including guest details, on our website (https://lnkd.in/gfinuWcT) You can download The Doctor’s Kitchen app for free to get access to all of our recipes, with specific suggestions tailored to your health needs and new recipes added every month.
