Dignifi Ltd, Cumbria Constabulary, and A Wilderness Way worked in partnership to provide colleagues and services across Cumbria with an incredible learning experience yesterday. Julia Pennington founder of Dignifi Ltd, led a session that focused on supporting frontline practitioners to better support children in the care system and people in the criminal justice system by adopting a trauma-responsive approach. Julia was joined by Sosa Henkoma, who won Crime Fighter of the Year in 2023, Sosa spoke of his lived experiences of being an exploited child and his recovery. BREAKING NEWS! We just got the results of a pilot in a mens prison where we explored the prevalence of trauma with 90 men in 10 months. We wanted to understand how much trauma was on the wing and give people new strategies to cope, particularly in a difficult environment like prison. This is what we found. • 82% of participants reported experiencing a significant bereavement or loss • 78% described growing up in an unsafe neighbourhood • 76% grew up feeling misunderstood or unloved • 71% experienced humiliation or threats in childhood • 67% experienced physical abuse to varying degrees • 60% experienced family member being imprisoned • 41% experienced the care system and were Looked After Children • 68% experienced multiple home or school moves • 57% experienced bullying and discrimination, this was 100% for EM participants Trauma symptoms they reported • 100% of them reported 1 or more symptom. • The average number of symptoms experienced was 15 out a possible 20 on the assessment. • 58% reported to having 15+ symptoms out of the possible 20 on a sliding scale of severity. • The average score across this cohort was 43 with 64% of people scoring over 33 out of 80 - therefore meeting the clinical threshold for PTSD. • 9 people scored 70+ in terms of severity of their symptoms and were likely to be suffering with severe PTSD of a complex nature. • The symptoms scoring highest for frequency and severity were ‘trouble sleeping’ and ‘super alert’, with ‘negative feelings’ 'flashbacks' and ‘unwanted dreams’ also scoring high. Our Results On review after 12 sessions, there was a significant decrease in scores. • The average number of trauma symptoms experienced in the last month went from 15 to 5. • When exploring the severity of symptoms, the most difference can be seen with the average on severity of symptom falling to 8 out of 80 from 43 out of 80. The results speak for themselves. But in addittion to the men feeling better, 27% were released on parole and of that number 84% have so far remained in the community! It just shows that when you ask, not why the behaviour, but why the pain.. everything changes! I am super proud of the team that worked to achieve these fantastic results! Not to mention the 90 courageous men that embarked on this journey with us! Thank you! Also a huge thank you to our partners Career Connect for giving us this opportunity to make an impact. Looking forward to thinking about how we can develop this more widely with you and with our new government! You can hear directly from the men below ... to say I am delighted and proud is an understatement...

So after a busy day on the wing at HMP Hindley, I got home to an email from someone I used to work with 19 years ago. She saw this post online today (before I did) and emailed me to check if it was me. When I confirmed it was she said "I feel so proud of you and what you've achieved, congratulations on your work, you will absolutely have changed lives". To say I am beaming would be an understatement. How lovely of her to reach out and how wonderful to see our Sosa Henkoma continuing to grow, flourish and share his story. Excellent write up, we need to shine a light on this! #proud #rootcauses #traumainformed #traumarecovery #knife crime #childcriminalexploitation #traumaresponse #gangs
