Last week, Vogue Business held their annual Fashion Futures event in London at Somerset House, bringing together brands, circular startups, investors, suppliers and NGOs to discuss how to scale sustainable fashion. Around 200 industry attendees gathered for a series of panels and keynote sessions, which unpacked the realities of scaling circular fashion brands and the challenges businesses face in raising capital at different stages of growth. Talking to Executive European Editor, Kirsty McGregor, Depop CMO Peter Semple was invited on stage to discuss how Depop has evolved from a Gen Z focused social resale startup to being a key driver of the global secondhand market. The session explored how Depop’s marketing and product experiences make secondhand buying and selling exciting and compelling for ever-widening audiences. Kirsty and Peter also discussed how to balance sustainability messaging with the primary needs of fashion shoppers - the right inventory at the right price - to further encourage the mass adoption of circular fashion. About us
Depop is the community-powered circular fashion marketplace where anyone can buy, sell and discover desirable, affordable secondhand fashion. Together with its community of approximately 35 million registered users, Depop is on a mission to make fashion circular - encouraging more people to choose secondhand and extend the lives of their clothes, redefining fashion consumption. The company was founded in 2011 and is headquartered in London, with offices in New York and Manchester and a team of approximately 400 employees. In 2021, Depop became a wholly-owned subsidiary of Etsy - the global marketplace for unique and creative goods - and continues to operate as a standalone company. Find out more at www.depop.com Our mission is to make fashion circular and to create an inclusive environment where everyone is welcome, no matter who they are or where they’re from. Depop’s Head of Trust and Safety, Sophie Walsh, is familiar with helping organisations to do the right thing for users, in a way that also mitigates risk to the business. She recently took to the stage at Marketplace Risk’s Global Summit to discuss the use of AI in driving forward positive impact for online marketplaces, alongside Sasha Haco, CEO and Founder of Unitary AI, and Donatas Aleksandravičius, Engineering Manager at Vinted. Rich discussions included topics such as ‘how online marketplaces can leverage AI to improve safety and reduce risk’, and ‘where can AI help, and where are the gaps’? Insights highlighted how the strengths of AI have enabled scalability through machine learning and large language models. These capabilities have enabled us to change the ways in which we can keep our platform safe for users and build trust amongst our talented and creative community. 🌊 Last week, a group of Depoppers spent their Impact Hours making a real difference with a Thames riverside and beach cleanup in collaboration with Washed Up Cards - a fantastic social enterprise that combines wellness with environmental action through cleanups and creative workshops, utilising the plastic and rubbish collected. In just 90 minutes, 7 bags of plastic, countless micro-plastics, and several large items were removed, totaling approximately 80kg of rubbish - a significant contribution to keeping Tower Hamlets cleaner and greener! At Depop, we’re proud to offer all full-time employees two additional paid volunteer days per year, giving everyone the opportunity to support causes they’re passionate about and drive meaningful environmental and social change. A huge thank you to Washed Up Cards and our wonderful employees for their efforts! Together, we’re proving that small actions can lead to big impact. 💚 #DepopImpactHours

Thrilled to have been part of a fantastic panel discussion with the brilliant Jeremy Kingsley at the Economist Impact AI Leader’s Club in Copenhagen earlier this week alongside my inspiring fellow panellists Natalia Rodriguez Martin, Anneli Gunnarsson, Shreya Ruikar, and George Mudie. We had some great conversations about where AI is delivering the most value, the practical challenges of scaling it, and the need for strong data infrastructure and governance to enable teams to innovate effectively and at pace within a clear framework. Big thanks to Meribeth Banaschik for the thought-provoking AI crisis simulation, it was a great opportunity to exchange ideas on navigating complex AI scenarios. Thanks for organising such an amazing event, Caitlin M.! #EconAILeadersClub

Depop buyers and sellers have been helping to popularise secondhand fashion and drive forward resale culture for over a decade, but how do we continue to earn cultural relevance and resonance? Last week, Depop CMO Peter Semple took to the stage as keynote speaker at Brands&Culture to discuss how brands can contribute to culture, rather than just chase cultural influence. Last week, to wrap up Black History Month at Depop, the aim was to embrace this year's theme of “Reclaiming Narratives,” by giving people the chance to connect, share stories, and experience the richness of different cultures firsthand. The Black@Depop ERG hosted a special Vibes Takeover, celebrating Black culture, flavours, and community. The team brought the energy with an Ultimate Black Pub Quiz, where winners took home vouchers for Jamii—a fantastic platform supporting Black British creators and makers, while DJ2Smooth took us back with an old-school set. 🎶 A huge thank you to our vendors for a delicious spread; Gebeta Ethiopian Kitchen, 2 Nigerian Boys, and Belly's Taste of Caribbean, and Bad Breed Rum Punch and Wondamix who kept the drinks flowing. To close out the BHM celebrations, we experienced a coffee ceremony led by Rhoda Authentic Ethiopian Coffee & Cake Shop, where employees enjoyed the rich flavours of traditional coffee and sweet bread, bringing a bit of cultural heritage to London HQ. A perfect ending to an inspiring month! ✨ #BlackAtDepop #ReclaimingNarratives

🌟 Last month, the Black@Depop ERG welcomed 12 mentees from The Elephant Room "One Month Mentors" scheme to London HQ! 🌟 Kicking off with an office tour and giving everyone a look behind the scenes at Depop, Black@Depop Co-Chair Khadra Aden then hosted a powerful panel talk with some inspiring ERG members including Salieu Jallow, Morgan Thorne, Jumoke Adekunle, Rebecca Levy-Lewis, Dana Ashur and Laila, where they discussed their journeys and experiences working in tech. A huge shout out to The Elephant Room — the One Month Mentors scheme is an amazing initiative that’s supported hundreds of young people since its inception. It’s always a privilege to connect, share, and uplift the next generation of young professionals eager to take the next steps in their careers. #BlackAtDepop

A couple of weeks ago, we teamed up with Snap Inc. to host our very own Depop Pop-up at Snapstreet—an immersive, in-person activation that brought Depop to life through workshops, giveaways, and an interactive AR Snap mirror. The crowd favourite was the Depop Claw machine, giving attendees a chance to win clothing and accessories ranging from vintage Chanel sunglasses to Palace T-shirts. The four-day event was a huge success, and it was incredible to feel the love for Depop, especially since we haven't been outside in a minute. A special shout-out to Depop seller Sante Koranteng, who hosted a sold-out, oversubscribed workshop on the Saturday! It’s amazing to see how much you’ve grown as both a creative and a businesswoman over the years. Big love to the team who brought this event to life Oskar Platts-Palmer, my partner-in-crime on this one, Natalie Bean, and the entire social + creative team, who worked quickly to turn this around for us.
