  • Earlier today we launched our latest white paper in Westminster – The Future of Dentistry: Unlocking solutions to improving oral health. Oral health has never been a more significant issue for the nation, and our white paper outlines our members’ priorities and insights for shaping a positive future for dentistry. As part of the launch, we hosted a roundtable with parliamentarians and dental industry experts to discuss how we can secure the future of dentistry. Sponsored by Helen Morgan MP, the Liberal Democrat spokesperson for health and social care, and chaired by Stephen Hancocks, Editor-in-Chief of the British Dental Journal Portfolio, the roundtable spent time building consensus with key decision makers around the policy solutions needed to establish sustainable and equitable access to dental care. Discussions focused on the vital role of private and mixed practice in improving access, the necessary improvement of training and recruitment across dental teams, and how to boost oral health education through wider public campaigns, with a shift towards a preventative approach to healthcare. • Our Oral Health Survey 2024 shows access to dental care is still a concern for adults across the UK, with 31% of people worrying about the cost of visiting the dentist. This explains why there’s been a decrease in the number of people who pay as they go, down 5% since 2021 for both NHS and private patients, and an increase in people reclaiming their costs via a health plan or insurance plan, this year 7%, up from 5% in 2021.
