‘What do diamonds do for people?’ Our Brand Ambassador, Lupita Nyong’o, sought to answer this question by visiting South Africa and Namibia, where diamonds are a key source of wealth and opportunity, providing jobs, local procurement, taxes, and support for biodiversity conservation. Her journey began at the Venetia Mine in South Africa, where over 4,000 people are employed. Lupita also explored the Venetia Limpopo Game Reserve, a conservation success story that’s creating wildlife habitats and offering future tourism and livelihood opportunities. In Namibia, she visited NDTC (Namibian Diamond Trading Company) and Namdeb, both 50:50 joint ventures between the Namibian Government and De Beers. NDTC sorts and values rough diamonds, while Namdeb discovers some of the world’s highest-value gems. Lupita Nyong’o’s journey wrapped up with a visit to the EntreprenHer programme and the #BeFree Youth Campus, both funded by De Beers. These initiatives empower women entrepreneurs and support youth development, creating sustainable futures for communities across Southern Africa. #EntreprenHer, in collaboration with UN Women and local governments, has supported over 2,600 women micro-entrepreneurs in South Africa, Namibia, and Botswana since 2017, with plans to help 1,500 more. The #BeFree Youth Campus, founded by former First Lady of Namibia Monica Geingos, provides holistic services for youth, from mental health support to legal guidance and skills development, addressing critical issues like Gender-Based Violence and empowering young people. • De Beers Group x National Geographic: Okavango Eternal, Life on the line Fishing is a way of life for communities that live along the Kavango in Namibia, a river the country shares with both Angola and Botswana as it makes its way down into the Okavango Delta. To catch nothing is to go hungry. Recently, changes in climate have led to a decrease in fish stock in the river, which has a knock-on effect all the way up the food chain. “Malnutrition is a big problem, with one in every five children not getting all the nutrients that they need to grow up healthy and strong,” explains Vilio Muunda, a fish biologist from Namibia. The young scientist is determined to help change this through his PhD research. After spending time in a nearby fishing community, he realized that the answer could lie in bycatch—the smaller fish people would often catch as they attempted to catch the larger fish with their mosquito nets. These smaller fish, the bycatch, is usually thrown back or used as bait. Biological studies in the region have typically focused on the larger fish, leaving virtually nothing known about these smaller, seemingly more abundant compatriots. Now, Vilio's research is filling in those gaps and showing promising results with these small fish offering a potential lifeline. Vilios' research is one of 24 tertiary studies in the area, receiving scientific grants funded by De Beers through #OkavangoEternal - our partnership with National Geographic, part of our commitment to #BuildingForever. Last week, we had a special moment meeting The Prince of Wales in Cape Town, where we discussed one of our (and his!) favorite topics: seaweed 💙 Kelpies Michael "Maik" Mwinga, Jodi Nel-Parker, Jaqueline K., and Daniel Hooft were honored by a royal visit from Prince William, who personally requested to meet seaweed innovators like us. With great enthusiasm, he shared his commitment to raising awareness around seaweed, calling it “the greatest untapped resource we have on this planet” - we couldn't agree more. And what happens when the Prince stops for a chat? You can get a mention in a UK tabloid magazine Hello! in the UK and Point de Vue in France 🤭 Special thank you for Vincent Doumeizel for helping to organize "The Seaweed Road to UN Ocean Conference 2025" together with the United Nations Global Compact and Global Seaweed Coalition in partnership with The Earthshot Prize. The event brought together over 50 pioneers in African seaweed innovation for the first time—a big moment for the seaweed industry. #Earthshot #prize #seaweed #princeofwales #william #innovation #southafrica #pioneers
