Teaching healthcare professionals how to translate evidence-based nutrition into clinical practice

About us

CMUK is a social enterprise helping healthcare professionals translate evidence-based nutrition into clinical practice. As opposed to traditional online courses, we use the kitchen as a classroom and our multi-professional case studies to enhance nutrition consultation skills, encourage responsible social prescribing and ultimately improve patient care. At Culinary Medicine UK, we understand that the fight against poor nutrition cannot be fought alone and so we leverage a unique collaborative effort between dieticians, doctors, psychologists and health coaches to elevate the conversation about food.

What a Friday night it was! We’re still buzzing from our second Doctify and YouTube Health event at the iconic Google HQ in London, where we brought together top clinicians and #experts to celebrate the power of video in #healthcare. 🎉 A massive thank you to everyone who joined us for a celebration of innovation, education, and collaboration. It was truly inspiring to see over 300 #clinicians come together, with many taking their first steps into the exciting world of #videocontent creation. The energy and enthusiasm in the room were contagious as we explored the future of #patient content creation and its potential to build trust, educate, and engage. 💙 Special thanks to our brilliant keynote speakers: 🔹Dr. Vishaal Virani, MBBS 🔹Dr Suman Saha 🔹Dr. Aziza Sesay 🔹Dr Oscar Ferguson ...and to the iconic duo 👏- our CEO, Stephanie Eltz, and ChatGPT - for introducing each speaker with such flair, humour & grace! 😉 🥰 Your #insights and #expertise left us feeling empowered and inspired long after the event (evident from all the fantastic social media posts and Stories you’ve tagged us in!). 💫 We recognised Vik Veer for ‘Illuminating Complex Care’ through his popular YouTube channel, where he explains all things #ENTcare, and Dr Karan Rajan for helping millions of patients with his myth-busting (and very humorous) short videos. 🙏 A huge thank you to Incision Indemnity, Medserv, Bevan Brittan LLP, and Medico Digital for supporting the event. A special shout-out to Dr Sumi Baruah from Culinary Medicine UK CIC for creating a moment of mindfulness after a busy week. 👏 We hope you enjoyed the event as much as we did! It was amazing to see your enthusiasm for content creation and to watch you take the first step by filming your intro video on the spot. There’s so much more to come! Soon, we’ll be sharing additional insights, highlights, and tips from the event 💡. Follow us on our socials to stay updated on what’s next! Can’t believe it’s December already! Rounding up and reflecting on a productive November for Culinary Medicine UK CIC We continue to train UCL medical students at Westminster Kingsway where kitchens are transformed into classrooms. We leverage the expertise of chefs, dietitians, and doctors to deliver practical, case-based discussions alongside nutrition research reviews. Our efforts have reached over 7,000 health professionals in the UK and internationally through face-to-face and blended learning approaches. We are currently updating our online course Elaine Macaninch On Friday, I had the privilege of raising awareness about our work in #lifestylemedicine. I led a mini box breathing session for over 200 doctors and health professionals at Doctify event YouTube health Google London. Attendees were invited to take home a box of raisins and try our mindful eating exercise and utilise our free resources https://lnkd.in/eG26aZNC Patients use the internet and YouTube primarily to access health information and it was fantastic to hear about Dr. Vishaal Virani, MBBS leadership in ensuring verified health content from health professionals are promoted ahead of misinformation. Inspired listening to Dr. Aziza Sesay using her skills as a GP to create health content to destigmatise women’s health and reduce health inequalities I enjoyed Dr Oscar Ferguson showcase his educational videos and the best explanation of Coeliac disease I’ve seen yet! We will signpost to this video on our digital course for HCPs Culinary Medicine UK CIC We were delighted to speak at the inaugural Public Sector Catering Alliance Forum on November 19th in Leicester. Vince Kelly and I presented our findings from the “Healthy Plate, Healthy Planet” initiative, the first CPD event for hospitality sector, where we brought together key stakeholders from the food industries and academia to discuss sustainable food systems and public health. Topics on the 19th covered food-price inflation, sustainability, and the health impacts of growing obesity in the UK. Our talk focused on empowering chefs, unsung heroes preparing 1.9 billion meals annually in hospitals, care homes, and schools. We can help drive healthier outcomes despite facing challenges like misinformation about nutrition and creation of sustainable meals. Thrilled our dear friend and colleague Philip Shelley FIH won the Chairs Award that night As we move forward, we recognise that collaboration and partnerships are essential in addressing these challenges effectively. By working together across sectors, we can create meaningful change in public health through improved nutrition education and sustainable practices. Thank you to the organisations who have supported us in highlighting our crucial work #publichealth #nutrition #foodinhealthcare #lifestylemedicine #healthcare #publicsectorcatering #prevention #GP Public Sector Catering Doctify Google Stephanie Eltz Suman Saha

Time to rethink - Culinary Medicine UK CIC is promoting the power of food to this sector and others in hospitality and catering. In Swedish hospitals, food is cooked, often from scratch, on site, and – refreshingly – is considered to be ‘a prioritised part of care’

A sobering but also hopeful look at the food we think it’s OK to serve in hospitals by Mina Holland. This won’t change until politicians and the public sector stop seeing food, as Naomi Duncan says, “as a risk to be managed – a safety risk, a financial risk – not as a tool for health and education.” The examples of good practice highlighted in the article (and our work at Chefs in Schools) demonstrate that with care – dare I say ❤️ love – it’s possible to serve nutritious, delicious meals even on a tight budget. 🚀 But until we collectively recognize just how critical this is, hospitals will continue to serve food that is brown, beige, uninspiring, and detrimental to both our health and the nation’s finances. 😔 We can and must do better. ✅

‘We have learned to have low expectations’: why can’t British hospitals serve better food?

And these costs won't go down - until the public (and the "powers in charge") realise that their diet and lifestyle desperately and radically need to change...... A return to the fundamental benefits of a 'simpler' time and lifestyle......it is compatible with the 21st century....where there's will (and want) there is a way.....unlikely to be as profitable for industry - but should help save on healthcare costs.

My Highlight Of The Week (HOTW) is from the Swiss Federal Food Safety and Veterinary Office FSVO: https://lnkd.in/e9FzhatJ Thanks for the heads up Ali Morpeth (RNutr)! Diet culture is wild. If you keep up with social media, it’s hard to know what to eat - what someone says is bad for us, is now good: red meat increases risk of bowel cancer but essential for the carnivore diet. It’s get a bit confusing. Switch over to supermarkets, the traffic light system is inconsistent and the calories on restaurant menus are inaccurate. Our UK government guidance barely features on mainstream media or even social media. It might a source of information for those hoping to eat healthy food. Whether anyone reads it I don’t know but the inclusion of a significant portion of carbohydrates given the huge burden of diabetes and heart disease is worrying. I recently saw the Swiss guidelines which puts water and fruit and vegetables as the basis for diet with a necessity for movement put in to boot. We do see key chefs and scientists now talking about the famous 30 plants for greater gut bug diversity associated with better health outcomes. NHS is it now time to fall in line? Thanks for your hard work on this Nutritank CIC and Culinary Medicine UK CIC! Any ideas Dr Sumi Baruah, Dr Ally Jaffee MBChB BSc, Dr Iain Broadley?
